Are you positive that what is in the oil is gas, or could it be coolant ? Is there gas in the airbox, or the capped, 1/2" drain tubes down near the center stand ?

Sounds like a float still sticking. Does fuel drip from the petcock when off, and the fuel lines off of it?

Once you remove the fuel bowl on the bottom of the carburetor and remove the float, you will see the main jet which looks like a brass screw with a hole in it. They just screw out and there will be a number on the side of the jet indicating the size.

I need carburetor help for a 1980 Honda CX500.

For parts the best place to look is David Silver Spares, if they don't have it then there is a good chance it isn't available. To synchronise the carbs you will a set of vacuum gauges. They aren't expensive and they come with instructions.

there are orings, you need to unbolt the carbs apart. you might have to synch the carbs afterwards. you might as well try and get a rebuild kit and clean all the jets and replace all the rubber parts in the carbs.

Do a compression test on the bike if the psi in any cylider is below 100 psi the motor needs a ring job or valve job or both, the way to determine which engine component is weak (a leaking valve or worn piston rings) is as follows with an oil can squirt 2 or 3 times into the low pressure cylinder after noting the dry compression reading with no oil, if the compression reading increases more than 10 psi it is worn piston rings if the reading hardly changes at all it is a burnt vavle. If compression checks out ok the problem is either weak spark for that cylinder with the black plug or excessive gas or flooding from the carb.
