Shiftshaft on 1996 Royal Star - Updated?

I just replaced a broken "pin holder" on the end of a 1996 Royal Star shift drum. The new part has apparently been improved and updated, but does not seem to be compatible with the old shiftshaft assembly. Has the shiftshaft been updated as well? thanx..Brady T.

When you say "pin holder", I'm assuming that you mean the part that Yamaha refers to as the segment - it holds 5 short and one long dowel pin at the end of the shift cam assembly. In 1996 the segment part number was 26H-18185-00-00, it held five 93604-17198 dowel pins, one 93604-21197-00 dowel pin and a 26H-18561-01-00 side plate. However, in 1998 the segment part number 4NK-18185-00-00 held five 93604-12037-00 dowel pins and one 93604-16092-00 dowel pin; the side plate had been eliminated. The shift shaft for the early combination was 4NK-18101-00-00, for the later combination 4NK-18101-01-00. If you recognize the "pin holder" part number, you will know which shift shaft you should be using.

I have a 1996 Yamaha Royal Star and I am having oil leak from the shift shaft oil seal. Is this something I can replace myself? Is it replaced from the inside? Or can it be replaced from the outside? Any...

Dear,

for this u need to remove the outer cover of the gearbox..........and also u need a new oil seal to get it replaced immediately.
if you have all the proper tools and equipments with you then you can further go for self service.

also check for the oil level after replacing....

thanx

I have a 97 yahama royal star and it won't shift below second and it seems like its not going into fifth either

I have a 1998 and I had a problem with the bracket for the shifter coming loose and then it wouldn't shift properly. I just put in new bolts and now it is fine. Also mine has an indicator light to tell me when it is in fifth. Does yours have this light?

Noise on final drive

The drive shaft on the Royal Star can make noise if both ends are not properly lubricated; tourers have found that lubricants with a high molybdenum disulfide content applied to both ends at about 15,000 mile intervals will eliminate that aggravation. A readily available lubricant, Honda Moly 60 paste (60% molybdenum disulfide by weight) has been used by Goldwing owners for years, and it works just as well on Royal Stars.

Hypoid gears in the final drive can also be noisy. Short of having the drive disassembled and replacement shims installed, changing to a good synthetic 75W-140 lubricant will quiet or eliminate the whine.

Splines and pins in the final drive and rear wheel assembly can also cause noise. Remove the rear wheel, put a thin layer of Honda Moly 60 paste on the pins, dampers and in the drive spline, ditto with the mating spline on the final drive. I relubricate all of these every time I change rear tires, probably more often than necessary, but it's convenient to do when the wheel is off.
