Hi Leewy....Ok...Turn the crankshaft counterclockwise until the " I " mark on the rotor is aligned with the stationary pointer on the crancase cover.Fit the timing chain onto both camshaft sprockets and install the camshafts on the cylinder head. The camshafts should be installed onto the cylinder head so that the exaust cam sprocket punch mark " E " and the intake cam sprocket punch mark " I " align with the surface of the cylinder head, both marks facing out of course towards their prospective ports.thats about it Lee.Please leave some feedback if this has helped in anyway. from tilleydog at Moto Headquarters.

1999 yamaha wr400 backfires running rough

Hi, Anonymous and the usual suspects are:
1. Severely discharged or a damaged battery, should have 12.5 volts or better and be able to pass a load test if necessary.
2. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
3. Faulty main circuit breaker and or connections.
4. Faulty ignition coil and or connections.
5. Faulty spark plug, oil or gas fouled, wrong heat range or service type, wrong gap, loose in the cylinder head, broken electrode or insulator.
6. Faulty spark plug cables, leaking or broken, internal damage check for spark leakage in the dark.
7. Faulty ignition module, switch, CKP, MAP, CMP, sensor and or any connector in the ignition circuit could have corroded, loose, or broken pins/sockets
8. Burnt exhaust valve or air leak in the exhaust system.

1999 yamaha yz400f popping wont idle

Hi Anonymous, popping on deceleration is usually caused by an air leak in the exhaust system and is generally located where black carbon soot is seen as a flashing build up from any joint connection. This condition can easily be remedied by removing and cleaning both joint pieces and reassembling with high temp silicone and the correct torque applied to the exhaust clamps where present. Coughing is usually caused by an air leak in the intake system and will generally have the same telltale signs of location by a wet or damp buildup of oil/gas seepage at the intake manifold to cylinder head or carburetor connection and in rare instances a worn throttle plate shaft and or seals. Spitting is usually caused by a faulty accelerator pump and or nozzle, or the float bowl needle and seat leaking and overflowing through the main jet mixing well nozzle, or the air-fuel mixture screw set to lean. I replaced the top end of my 1999 yz400f. got it to start but it won't stay running unless the choke is on half way.

The most common answer you will receive for this question is more than likely check and clean your pilot jet and pilot circuit with compressed air and new pilot jet ideally. I must confess in most cases this does apply except the last 3 rebuilds I have done on 400, 426 and a 450 YZ exactly the same problem where hard to start and when started only wanted to run with choke on they all ended up being leaking intake valves
Best option if you can is clean pilot circuit replace pilot jet - Then double check your valve clearances (sometimes to tight can leave the intake valves hanging open when meant to be closed) then if still no joy, Do a leak down test or get your local shop to do leak down test - The leak down test will save you a lot of frustration diagnosing internal issues. Just to clarify don't pay too much attention to the percentage loss of the test just do the test to confirm if there is a leak or not.
good luck - Regards Jamie
