I have a 1983 gs550l need a rotor for the generator it has a tscc engine will a 1980 rotor work

in the absence of you not making marks or observations

best guess is crank mark is a straight line to top cam mark

other wise old school way
both number one valves closed
number one piston at top compression point
lower harmonic balancer at TDC timing mark
distributor rotor at number one plug lead pick up
top cam should be at its correct timing mark


internet search hopeless today
all i can find online is timing belts for later models

some bikes have idling screw on carb.have you check to see if your carb booths are seated and not sucking air.

There is no trick put the key in turn it and lift, some of the older machines had a lock and a catch, look to the rear of the lock for a catch, if this is as yours is you have to operate both at the same time

How to remove generator from engine (model DGUH5S-2). 11 horsepower Honda engine.GX340 .


I have not worked on Dunlite generators, however have worked on many different brands using the GX340. When removing generator parts, one must keep in mind the brushes contacting the armature. Remove brush pack if any and set to side. Next unplug stator wiring making sure to draw diagram of connections. Remove bolts mounting generator/stator housing to frame and carefuflly pull off leaving only armature /rotor on the crank of the engine. Remove the long bolt thru rotor into crank. Now you will need to apply penetrating oil to the shaft of the engine to loosen the rust on the taper. It may take several applications. Place a piece of hardwood against
metal to protect the rotor and firmly rap with hammer on
both sides. You may need to use pry bar against engine
and rotor as you hammer hardwood. Repeat as necessary,
some rotors will be very stuck due to rust. Be very
carefull with hammer and or prybars not to damage
windings. Have patience and let oil work. Good luck.

Does that have the ceramic ballast on firewall as well? If so, use a jumper wire from terminal to terminal to see if that helps. (ceramic block about 1-1/2" x 3") usually was located on passenger area firewall behind engine.

Proper start-up service for a 1980 Suzuki GS550L motorcycle.


Shoot WD40 into each cylinder to get them wet.
Change gearbox oil and oil filter. Use 10w40 motor oil in the gear box. Don't use any synthetic oils, oil marked "EC", or oil with "special" additives. Stick with the major brands; Pennzoil, Quaker State, Mobil or Shell. How bad is the rust inside the gas tank? I would consider a liquid tank liner if rusted. Google “ kreem fuel tank liner “ or go to www.http://www.4secondsflat.com/Fuel_Tank_Sealer.html
  • Lube chain or get a new chain (if needed)
  • Lube Throttle, clutch and front brake cables
  • Lube Speedometer cable
  • Grease the swingarm, axle and steering stem bearings.
  • Install a new battery
  • Clean, and balance the carbs. This will be the problem area. They will likely be gummed up pretty good. Be sure to install an in-line fuel filter before starting the bike.

Alternator Wires


Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Being of the the same color indicates that they could be connected in any order to the rectifier/regulator. Additionally, being a 3 phase AC system, the diodes inside the rectifier/regulator would process the output of the alternator and 'sum' (no order required) them up to produce the DC voltage.

What is the reliability of the 1980 suzuki gs750l, .


Many of these bikes will run fine with high miles. I would check the tires, fork seals for leaking fluid. Listen to the engine and exhaust for odd noises. Pinging and rattling are bad. See how it shifts. These bikes require a special tool to replace the clutch plates and that can be expensive.

I owned a 1982 GS550L with 33k Miles on it, and it rode fine. Watch that tire pressure and suspension. Other than that, enjoy your bike!
