CDI stands for "Capacitor Discharge Ignition" It is a solid state system that replaces the old points ignition system. It consists of a control unit, (usually an alloy box under one of the side covers or seat,) and the pick-up or sensor on the end of the crank or camshaft....

How do I know what wire feeds from the ignition switch to the cdi as none of the colour match at both ends

with the ignition off ,use a multimeter set on continuity ( ohms)
place one lead on a wire at the ignition switch and the other end on a wire at the cdi when you have a circuit mark that wire and so on till you have identified all the wires
then turn on the ignition switch ans set the multimeter to volts dc and check which of those wires now has a voltage reading

What is the CDI for / what is the function?

The CDI is your ignition. It stands for Capacitor Discharge Ignition. If it keeps going out then you have either a poor connection or a bad CDI box.

Where do you find the spark plug and CDI on a 50cc Chongqing Bashan scooter? And how do you replace the sparkplug and CDI?

The spark plug is located on the cylinder head of the engine. Look for a really thick wire from the ignition coil. The plug is on the other end. Your plug, if a four stroke engine, is a CR7HSA, which takes a 5/8 deep well socket to remove. The CDI is a black box, sometimes in the battery box, most often under the seat bucket after its removed.

No spark on Hyusu

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

For a "no spark" problem with a Hyosung RX125, check:
  • temporarily disconnect the battery. With the engine on at both the ignition switch and engine kill switch, verify that the green wire to the CDI does not measure 0 ohms to ground;
  • if it does, check the ignition switch and the engine kill switch;
  • it it measures anywhere between 50 ~ 500 ohms, then reconnect the battery and check that there is +12 on the orange wire going to the CDI with ignition switch on;
  • for a pulsating voltage (high ACV) at the white / blue wire coming from the CDI going to the ignition coil;
  • for a pulsating voltage (low ACV, 0.5VAC) at the green wire coming from the pulser coil going to the CDI; and
  • of course, check if the CDI (black / white) is connected to the ground.
Postback results of tests.

Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

No ignition changed cdi unit. still no ignition. any ideas? wayne

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

As in most bikes, the CDI is dependent on the other parts of the ignition system. Check the connection / status of the other parts:
  • terminal of the ignition coil - should have a pulsating high AC voltage from the CDI. Tested alone, the ignition coil should have 0.1 ~ 0.3 ohms from terminal to ground and 3 ~ 5 kilo ohms high voltage to ground;
  • pulser coil - should have very low pulsating AC voltage fed to the CDI. Depending on the brand would be 50 ~ 500 ohms;
  • IGN + 12 - supplied to the CDI through the Engine Stop Switch;
  • ground - ground.

Postback results of checks.

Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

Is a 2 stroke motorcycle engine have an alternetor?

yes all motorcycles have an alt. its on the left side case its in the engine and what you have to do is remove the cover which may have around 6 - 8 bolts on it. cdi is not an alternator it stands for capacitor discharge ignition and it is an ignition unit . BTW which make amd model is ur motorcycle. the locations may change on some models.
