Drain the oil and remove the screws/bolts that hold the pan into place.

Then use a flat-blade screwdriver to gently prise the pan free.

Clean both mating surfaces of pan and block - remove all traces of the old gasket.

Smear some sealant compound on the oil pan - this will hold the new gasket in place. Put the new gasket onto the oil pan and align the bolt holes. Lift the pan into place and tighten the bolts.

The photo below is a generic image of oil pan with gasket.

SOURCE: 2004 Chevy Cavalier Oil leak

Replacing an oil pan gasket on a car shouldn't be too difficult for you, say, about an hour or two. As long as you follow some simple guidelines, the leak should be eliminated. Improper tightening or seating of the gasket material can defeat the purpose of your work. Grab a Haynes manual, or a tech guide for your vehicle, and have it handy.

I would suggest tracking the oil leak to ensure that it's not your front seal on your crankshaft. The amount of oil that you describe sounds like a bit much for an undisturbed oil pan gasket.

The engine does have to be raised. The bolts are not easy to get to until the engine is lifted and the engine mount is removed. I'm doing this job right now and the book time is around 5 hours.

If you want to repair the oil pan I would also check lower engine mount for leaking oil and cracks in anti sway bar near fitting's. This due to engine mount is oil filled. OEM sway bar is made of tubular steel and they crack easy. Replacement sway bar is solid steel. Here's the kicker. When they pull the lower frame to service oil pan. The engine mount and sway bar are attached to that frame. A honest mechanic should only charge for parts ($35 for mount and $100 for sway bar) and maybe a extra hour. My mechanic did all in 5 hours. FYI gasket is only $35 bucks. Good luck

Hi. It sounds like you pretty much have the whole list required for this job. Get yourself an old pan to drain out any old left in the oil pan. Undo the drain plug at the bottom of the pan and drain. Remove bolts and oilpan, then remove the oil filter. Replace all and fill with oil. Hope this helps

How do you change the transmisson filter on a 1996 chevy cavalier

look underneath the car. you will see the oil pan and another pan on the drivers side. take all the bolts out of that pan. NOT THE OIL PAN. and drain the fluid. remove all the old gasket material. change the filter. it will be obvious. and reinstall. be careful not to over tighten the bolts on the pan you will split the gasket and it will leak like a siv.

Water leaking from a freeze plug and water in the oil pan in a 283 small block chevy engine

If you have a bad or leaky freeze plug, also known as soft plugs, it needs to be replaced. Your brass plugs are the best, and in some hard to get to places there are rubber plugs that can be adjusted to fix the problem. But if you have oil in the oil pan, assuming no one put water in the engine. You probably overheated the engine enough to acquire a cracked head gasket. Normaly that's the problem, could be a cracked head also, but more than likely a gasket. If you decide to remove the heads and replace the gaskets, good idea to have the heads resurfaced.
