Question about 1982 Yamaha XJ 650

1 Answer

Bought a 82' Yamaha maxim 650 from some guy who said it had been sitting awhile, not sure how long.new battery and spark plugs. the bike will turn over, but will not start. I've cleaned the carbs out twice, all jets are cleaned out, ect. I've tried just about everything i know, but to no avail. the only other thing i can think of is the carbs need to be sync'd. Anybody got an idea?

i checked the plugs, all four of em are getting spark, i replaced with fresh fuel, gas is coming out of the fuel tap, bowls are filling up, the air filter is super dirty, which may be the cause, i dont know.

Hi,

You didn't say whether you're getting fire. Did you take out a a plug, push it back into the plug wire, then turn the bike over to see if it's sparking? If the carbs need to be synced, it should still start, even though it would run very rough. If the timing is way off, this would also be a big reason it won't start. You said the carbs are clean, but you didn't say whether your getting gas to the carbs.

If you pull off the fuel line from one of the carburetors and turn the bike over once again, you should have gas bleeding from the line. If not, it could very well be your fuel line or your filter - or both. Gas turns into a sludgy mess when it's sitting in a vehicle for a long period of time. Your entire fuel system should be checked.

If you can please answer some of the questions above, we can move further on this if you wish to write me back. I hope this helps.

I think the timing is off. Although the carburetors seem like the culprit, there is something else going on here. Your not getting combustion in the chambers, as though the valves aren't in sync with the spark. I would be suprprised if it wasn't a timing issue. Best thing to do is manually manipulate the flywheel (cause you cant run a timing gun on it if it's not running, or course) in small increments.

All of the ingredients are there. It gets a bit frustrating that we cant be hands-on with these problems sometimes. Trying to help fix things like cars and motorcycles when we are unable to see the situation firsthand leaves us with educated guesses as to where certain problems may lie. It's much different when you can see and listen and physically navigate through the problem, I believe you are close though.

No spark to spark plugs. Trying to restore old bike, if I can get it to start. 1982 Yamaha Maxim 750 YICS

That bike has two coils that often go bad, and also it has a semi solid state breaker ignition system that often causes problems. You should join a site for Yamaha maintenance, where you can partake of the members knowledge. see: http://www.yamahaclub.com/forums/topic/8640-1982-yamaha-maxima-650/

If the bike has been sitting for awhile it may be clogged with old gas that evaporated an turned to varnish.

Check your choke cable and make sure it's properly adjusted.

You may have to clean the carbs. Or your coils are not sending spark to the plugs.

Change oil and, filters regularly; lube the throttle cables and, all moving parts drain the fuel tank and, replace the fuel filter every year, or; when needed. never leave fuel in the bike when you store it without using "stabil" only check your ignition with a timing light get a maintenance schedule from the bike's manufacturer and, follow it.
