Hi,
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
goodluck!

SOURCE: I'm trying to change the speedometer light on my Yamaha VStar

Perusal of a parts manual shows the bulbs to be in sockets with wires hooked to them which press into the outer back of the speedometer head, remove the offending socket (the one on the top, the other 4 are the function lamps I previously mentioned) by gently pulling it outward, the bulb will slide out for replacement.
Have fun and good luck.

SOURCE: How difficult is it to install a new speedometer

That is a fairly easy task.
Remove the speedo bezel, and disconnect the wires and the speedo cable.
Remove the rear seat, then remove the front seat.
Unbolt the gas tank, turn fuel off, disconnect fuel line, slide tank back then remove.
Unscrew speedo cable from speedo drive at front wheel axle.
Note routing of speedo cable, remove speedo cable, install new cable using same routing as old cable. You will probably have to spin the inner cable to get it to properly engage the drive mechanism at the bottom. If you install the bottom first, you can turn the cable at the top with your fingers until the bottom fully seats.
Give each fitting for the speedo cable a slight twist (1/8 of a turn past finger tight) with a pair of pliers so they don't come loose
Reinstall all remaining parts in reverse order of dis-assembly.

1999 yamaha roadstar 1600 speedometer odometer and gas gauge stopped working all indicator lights work nuetral bright light and clock all work have checked and cleaned all electrical connections i could...

Hi, Deberrybest whether one, some or all of your gauges go dark immediately or after a few minutes of riding the usual suspects are:
1. Blown instrument fuse.
2. A bad ground in the gauge circuit.
3. Faulty wiring before or after the fuse.
4. Faulty wiring or connector between the fuse and sensor.
5. Faulty wiring or connector between the sensor and gauge.
6. Gauge sensor has failed.
7. The gauge has failed.

V-Star speedometer light

I have no experience with this model ... on the other hand, I have never seen a unlit speedometer on a motorcycle even going back to the 1957 Crushman scooter!.

Go here: http://www.starmotorcycles.com/star/myyamaha/prompt/L3N0YXIvc2VydmljZS92aWV3bWFudWFscy9zdGFyX21hbnVhbHMuYXNweA==/Owners%20Manual/starthere.aspx and join the Kawasaki club for a few bucks and according to info at the site, you can view your particular manual for instructions on how to replace the light.

Go here if the above link fails to take you there ...www.starmotorcycles.com/star/service/servicehome/home.aspx click on View Owners Manual.
