Would not gaping the spark plugs properly cause fuel to come out of the tailpipe?

Never assume a spark plug is properly gaped out of the box....they aren't. Use a gauge meant for gaping plugs to set them.

The black soot is carbon from the gas usually caused by too much fuel being burnt. Incorrect fuel to air ratio. Take vehicle to service center and have set.

There are a number of things that could be the issue. There are three things that make the engine run: air, fuel, and spark. Anything preventing these things from properly performing will cause that problem. Without seeing or hearing the car, I would first check fuel pressure, voltage to the fuel pump under load (throttle) or a possible fouled out fuel filter. If those are fine, I would be looking at spark plugs, proper gaping of the plugs and such. Good luck.

Clue is in the condition of plugs when removed. Google 'Fault Diagnosis of Spark Plug Problems' to compare.

Does the coil need replaceing.

they should be the 41-932 plugs. AC Delco
gap should be 0.060 inch.
Check the gap before installing any plug. You never know if they were damaged in shipping before the part store got them, or if some idiot employee at the store attempted to juggle them while bored one day and damaged them by dropping them.

Smoke oil? For what your thinking that is oil? Smoke coming from the tailpipe is not good news, but does not necessarily mean the engine needs rebuilding. First, you need to determine what color of smoke is coming from the tailpipe
* White smoke is caused by water and or antifreeze entering the cylinder, and the engine trying to burn it with the fuel. The white smoke is steam. There are special gaskets (head gaskets are the primary gaskets) that keep the antifreeze from entering the cylinder area.
* Blue smoke is caused by engine oil entering the cylinder area and being burned along with the fuel air mixture. As with the white smoke, just a small drop of oil leaking into the cylinder can produce blue smoke out the tailpipe.
* Black smoke is caused by excess fuel that has entered the cylinder area and cannot be burned completely. Another term for excess fuel is "running rich." Poor fuel mileage is also a common complaint when black smoke comes out of the tailpipe. Black smoke out the tailpipe is the least cause for alarm.


If you confirm us that is oil smoke, check and keep in mind that the car has many seals, gaskets, and O-rings that are designed to keep the engine oil from entering the cylinder, and one of them has failed. If too much oil leaks into the cylinder and fouls the spark plug, it will cause a misfire (engine miss) in that cylinder, and the spark plug will have to be replaced or cleaned of the oil. Using thicker weight engine oil or an oil additive designed to reduce oil leaks might help reduce the amount of oil leaking into the cylinder.

The difference in plugs would not make it misfire . Is the check engine light on ? Most times when it is fuel system related it will not throw a code . I have installed new plugs that have been dropped and misfired but this is something that you will have to diagnose if it's one cylinder or multiple misfires. Firing order on 3.1L engine is 1-2-3-4-5-6. The ignition system is a waste-spark system, which uses 3 coil packs (1-4) (2-5) (3-6). Make sure that the paired cylinders' plug wires go to the same coil pack.
