Question about Yamaha RD 350 Motorcycles

1 Answer

Having a problem with points type ignition on a 1979 yamaha rd 350. I'm not sure how to set the point gap and timing or, what the point gap specs are. I also oopsed and dropped the insulation type washer, that is right above the left points. I made an insulation washer out of plastic, but, I'm not sure if I have it in right. The washer is in the area of the magneto or generator brush...... I'm not sure what the part is called, but, it seems like the 2 wires on the brush assembly should be connected, but, not grounded?

The base setting for the point gap is 15 thousandths. Set the left cylinder to .015 and check the timing with a timing light. Adjust the timing for the left side by moving the base plate up or down. Now change the timing light to the right cylinder and check the timing for the left cylinder. Adjust the timing for the left side by changing the points gap if the left base plate can not be adjusted, ( I can't remember if the left plate adjusts or not ). The wires should not be grounded. Check to see if the timing advances as it should when the revs increase. Below is a photo from an 1979 RD400 owners manual. Yours looks the same.

having a problem with points type ignition on a - f9ff258.png Go to the site below where you can see a parts diagram for your specific bike. You will select the actual brand, year, model, etc., once you go to the site. Part numbers and prices are also shown. You can order parts from this site. In the event no price is shown on a particular part and/or the notation "Not Available" is in the description, the part is not in stock. It looks like they have points for a 1975 RD350 and they should work on your bike. www.babbittsonline.com/pages/parts/viewbybrandand/parts.aspx

Yamaha can tell from the VIN what exact year and model your bike is. Check with them as I don't think the 350 was made in 1979.

What is the points gap for a Yamaha LT2

Factory spec is .014"
First, file and clean the contacts.
The procedure is to set the timing and THEN check the point gap. If the gap is too wide, bend the top contact arm down to correct gap and check timing again.
If the gap is too small (less than.012"), the points need to be replaced.
Good Luck,

Ignition plate coverd with carbon deposits @100 miles, must clean them with eraser or engine misfires, won't start. Cause & remedy? Thanks!

I believe that the 1980 Xs650 still used points and condensers for ignition. I know that my 1979 did. I would check to see if you had a bad condenser. That can mess up the way that points are firing and can cause excessive carbon build-up. I'm not sure if the condensers are sold separately from a points set, but you can always buy a matched set and only install the condensers so you don't have to reset your points gap.
It might also be worth checking the voltage coming into the points assembly. These Yamahas are known for bad ground points, which can spike or drop voltage at points in the electrical harness. You might be getting odd output from the rectifier, which could be due to a bad rectifier or simply bad wiring connections. But my immediate inclination is to test or simply replace the points condenser(s).

I need the timming specs in my 1966 buick riviera its got a 425 nailhead single 4.

The spark plug type is 44S and the gap is .032. The ignition points should be set at a 30 degree dwell angle or a .016 point gap. The ignition timing should be set at 2-1/2 to 3 degrees before top dead center, and the engine compression should be 170 psi. Let me know if you require a firing order diagram or any further assistance.

I'm interested in purchasing a repair manual for my 1989 rd 350 yamaha motorcycle. Is there an auto store, or any kind of store I can buy it from? Instead of buying it online. I'd really appreciate any...

first off what country are you in ???? the 1979 rd 350 was an air cooled engine, same as 250 . the 1989 engine was water cooled with yamahas ypvs exhaust valve both very differnt in design although some frame and body parts cross over.the manual for the air cooled is: isbn 0 85696 505 7 . i dont have the water cooled number but could find it you require. the rd was exported under various different names ie: rd , rz , ypvs and so on. you can contact me @ marcusloud@blueyonder.co.uk. hope this helps.
