You will need to take the recoil starter apart and inspect. The pull cord may have to be replaced.

Stihl chainsaw MS460 Can't pull recoil

It could be the recoil is stuck. a couple of things to check. Take the clutch and chain cover off, remove the spark plug and manually try to turn the motor over by turning the clutch. If the motor/engine is not seized, take the pull start/recoil cover off and pull on the cord to see if it will work and that the cord returns back into the recoil automatically. Don't take the nut off the inside of recoil holding the cord spool on. If the engine is not seized, and the recoil now goes in and out by pulling the start cord handle reassemble and pull over the engine a few times. This a good time to check the spark plug is working, now put the spark plug back in and start the engine. It's a good time to clean the air filter as well while the chainsaw is mostly apart and clean all oily sawdust off the chainsaw in the crevices etc..

Why won't my toro zx starter disengage flywheel

Hi Randy, from the top of your mower engine you should be able to see the "flywheel" (large circular cover, next to oil fill). Disclaimer - Before attempting anything by hand, ensure mower is off, blade disengaged, mower in park, key removed, battery disconnected, starter disengaged or not stuck in flywheel, etc... Now, if you can see/access the flywheel from the top, remove the spark plug and try to turn by hand, this is the same thing your starter is trying to turn, it should turn "fairly easy" by hand with spark plug removed. If you can't access the flywheel you'll have to try turning the main pulley from the crank shaft below/under your motor.
I don't want to overstate the obvious, but make sure your Battery is "fully charged" when trying to start by key.
If you can't budge the flywheel by hand with spark plug removed, the motor is likely seized. To what extent is unknown, I have often been able to remedy "seasonal seizing" by placing a pipe wrench on the lower shaft and gently applying pressure to "free" it. Doesn't work all the time, but has worked.
If you can turn the flywheel, time to look at the starter (see Bill Walsh Solution above). Let me know if this helped.

1974 40H.P. mercury outboard been setting up for 10to12yrs

This is probably a Merc 400 and you can remove the upper cowling and rope start it if you do not have the rope starter already attached. As I recall, all of this class motor were manual start with optional electric start, so thy came equipped with pull starters.

If the motor will not turn over manually then it is likely seized or frozen up and requires professional help. I have worked on numerous Mercs from 5 to over 100 HP and every one would turn over by pull starting if they were mechanically sound.

Engine turns over slowly

Try measuring battery voltage at the starter motor. Should not drop below 12V when cranking.

If does pull plugs and see if you can hand crank. If more is really tight try some very light oil in cylinders for a couple days and see if anything loosens up.

TORO Model 20016 6.5 hp GTS Engine pull cord is stuck and won't pull out more than 5 inches

Did you check under the deck for clogs? If its not clogged, DISCONNECT the spark plug wire, and try to turn the blade by hand... Oh yeah, did I mention DISCONNECT the sparkplug wire FIRST! If the blade won't budge, you might have a seized engine. If the blade does move, the problem is in the starter recoil. Rewind the starter string, and check the spring for damage. Good luck!

My 1993 mercury sable has been sitting an a garage for four years the battery was bad so I when I go to start it it Wil clik one time but it won't turn over. Why won't it start?

Sounds like the starter is bad. The one click would be the solenoid on the starter engaging but the starter does not turn. If it does not click the next time you try to start, then that would indicate the solenoid is sticking. Also ensure that the cable to starter is good and the connections are tight. The starter will have 2 wires. 1 heavy wire that runs the starter itself and a lighter wire that runs the solenoid. The second wire seems good. Also ensure there is not an inline fuse in the starter cable. Some cable incorporate the inline fuse in case the wire shorts out to the chassis.

I was driving my 2005 2.2 ictdi honda when a low knocking noise started, as if i was going over the cats eyes in the road, this noise intensified until the car cut out completely. all electricis where...

Have you checked your oil lately
Things don't sound so good
Did you happen to look at the oil pressure gauge when the car was knocking
I have a feeling your have seized your motor.
When you attempt to start the car do you hear a clunk from the starter
If you do, remove all the spark plugs from the engine and disconnect the coil packs
try to turn it over again and see if the starter can turn it now
By pulling the park plugs you remove the pressure of compression from the motor.
You can also try to turn the crank Manuel with a breaker bar.
If you cant get the motor to turn over you have seized the motor and it need an overhaul.
Hope this helps give feed back please. FixYa

Mazda 626 i am turning key nothing happening , checked starter, earth, lights coming on on dash, clock fades when turning key.

It is possible that your starter motor is stuck. First of all you can place your vehicle in the 2nd gear and push to disengage the starter if it had the bendex stuck. there after try to start. If not you will need to remove the starter motor. carefully do remove and place it on a table . clean off all dirt, then open the motor carefully. you can even test the motor with a heavy power cord and the battery but please be very careful to hold or use a good vice grip to hold since the intial torque can make it slip from your hand. thereafter check the brushes and the bush / bearings. if damaged or wobbly change / replace. Now you can reset the starter motor and test.
I am sure it will work. Good day
