Had my bike into the yamaha dealer because it keeps back firing and they rebuilt the carbs, changed the oil and put new spark plugs in but it still back fires. while riding the cylinder kicks in and out. once you start it it backfires till it warms up which takes about a half hour. Then it stops but then when riding it it will start backfiring again and then the cylinder kicks out...dont know what else to do or what it couls possibly be. i know the shop changed the spark plugs i thought they didnt cause one was like black so i changed them again and in 2 days the spark plug was black again...hope someone can help or im gonna trash this bike
Black plugs is running too rich
you lack of information doesn't include relevant information like engine size, 2stroke -4stroke-points or ignition module
backfiring is the combustion of a air fuel mixture when the inlet manifold is open to the combustion chamber
if 2 stroke it can be from a lean mixture from leaking crank shaft seals, worn rings
if 4 stroke it will occur when the inlet valve is open
this can be from incorrect valve clearance opening the valve too early
the ignition can be from a loose earth wire for the points or ignition module, faulty module or loose wire in the ignition switch or kill switch
I would take it to another bike shop for a diagnosis as the first shop is missing something either from a poor evaluation of the problem or from a lack of experience by the mechanics
Testimonial: "Thank you for the input Bill...sorry about the lack of information...i am totally new to bikes and its not even my bike its my husband so i didnt think to ask these questions...his is a 4 stroke and his bike is a 1984 yamaha virago 750...and i am unsure what a ignition module is lol"
thank you for more information. Now I can suggest close answers As I stated the back fire is from combustion fire getting back through an open inlet valve ( back fire is when the explosion is out of the air inlet ---fire out through he carby/s as to an explosion in the muffler which is not back fire--just so that I am talking at the right end)
as I stated it could be from incorrect valve clearance should be around .012" hot for the inlet and .0104" for the exhaust hot
have a compression test done to see if there is indications of a loose valve seat insert which will give the same result
next the ignition module is that item which produces a current at the right timing that flows through the coil/s to produce the spark for the plugs
I am not totally familiar with the bike as it may have points and not electronic (CDI) ignition
Assuming that it has points , the incorrect or spasmodic ignition causing the backfire can be from dirty points , incorrect point gap, loose condenser, faulty condenser, broken earth wire for the plate in the distributor
if it has a CDI( capacity discharge ignition or transistorized ignition instead of points ,the problem may be in that unit
check for vacuum leaks around the carby/s and any hoses that should be connected
further into the ignition system check for problems in the distributor drive worn , cracks in the cap, moisture or dirt/carbon , worn carbon button on the rotor button, loose rotor button
All of things should have been check out by the shop so as to provide service and make the customer happy with the bike and that is why I suggested a second opinion from another bike shop-not necessarily a yama shop--but a shop that repairs bikes in general
I hope that I have given you food for thought and now have some idea so that you can talk with the mechanic and ask the right questions
Thank you so much Bill!! your the first person to give us actual pointers. We actually went to see a mechanic today and looks like were putting a whole new motor in it now, because for some reason now the bike is sputting out alot of smoke all of a sudden so the mechanic said were gonna blow a rod or piston or something lol i stopped listening after he said we need a new motor lol, thank you very much for all your help!!

I've had a similar thing on my bike I went through everything plugs valves in the end I found by accident there is vacuum ports sat under neath the carbs one was used for the fuel tank and the rest were blanked with rubber caps and I noticed one was missing, replaced it and the bike hasn't given me any problems
Hope you get it sorted

Great reply Bill, you left nothing out! Melinda I hope you demanded the money back from that "repair" that wasn't done. If they give any resistance let them know your contacting Angie's list, Better Bussiness Bureau, Yelp & your local news consumer reports investigator. They don't want bad service linked to the company. My sister & I always get good results when informing a manager that we'll be reporting bad service to those agency's.
