There are several items running that can produce a noise
the water pump bearing will be a grumble or a tinny rattle , the idler pulleys will be a rattle, the ac pulley is on a bearing separate to the ac operation and is running all the time and the problem noise could be from that bearing
the alternator bearing will make a medium pitch rumble and if you have a viscous ( clutch hub) fan hub the bearings in it will produce a noise
an accredited mechanical shop will have a stethoscope and a good mechanic will be able to determine exactly where the noise is coming from
SOURCE: Squeaking sound, was told it is the water pump. Is this costly?
could be your water pump or your low on power stiring fluid... but if it was your power steering fluid low then it would be come harder for you to steer your car... check both

They may have guessed right but when I am locating the source of similar noise, I use a long screwdriver and (while paying CLOSE attention to belts and rotating parts!) place the tip on the suspect part and the handle behind my ear on the bone. This old trick can often confirm or eliminate possible sources. Modern shops have decent methods using an electronic audio probe that amplifies the noise making it much easier to isolate but it isn't worth it any more to me since I only do my own junk.

well either the clutch is the issue or the compressor itself needs rebuilt
