My husbands 2003 softail deuce cuts off while he is riding. Wait a bit and it starts right up. Have had it to HD and it keeps happening.

SOURCE: After riding a short time the engine kicks out turns off. Shortly after, I am able to turn the engine back on with key. I have a HD, 2000 Heritage Softail Classic.

after it shuts off, are you able to turn the engine over as if trying to start it? does it just turn over and not fire? or will it turn over at all? if it does turn over after it shuts off, immediately pull the plugs and check for spark. and also see if the plugs are wet with fuel.

Under the engine on the left side. Trans is on the right. Make sure you replace the "O" ring.

If your starter is spinning but the engine is not turning over, you over running clutch or Bendix is bad. On the Nippondenso style starter on the late bikes, this starter clutch is inside of the starter. You must pull the starter off and disassemble it to repair the starter. If you can do the job yourself, you can repair the starter and save some money. If you're going to have to pay a mechanic to do the work, simply replace the starter. Any money saved by repairing the starter in this case would be quickly depleted in labor cost.

Good Luck

SOURCE: I have a 2003 softail deuce, hard starting, spits and sputters at low speed and on highway.

make sure you have good fuel pressure. Your pump or something else in the fuel system may have failed.

Makes aclunking sound sometimes down shifting is

Yes, a clunking sound is normal if it does it occasionally, not all the time. I'd check my clutch adjustment. If the clutch is dragging a bit, this makes the clunking happen more often.

Quick check of the clutch adjustment. Put the bike in low gear and pull in the clutch. Now hit the starter button. If the bike surges forward before it starts up, you need to adjust the clutch.

Also, make sure that you aren't running too much oil in your primary. Too much oil will make the clutch do the same thing as it would if it were dragging. Only enough oil to reach the bottom of the pressure spring in the clutch.

Sundowner Deep Bucket Seat for my Deuce

I like the sundowner on the deuce, but I don't know about passenger comfort...IMO I haven't seen a saddlebag configuration that I like yet for the deuce. I'm going with a bag to carry on the luggage rack that attaches to the sissy bar Kuryakyn or Saddleman at this point, and I will be putting the bag on to rest on the seat so I can use it for a back rest. (I don't carry a passenger though). Good luck to you & let us know what you decide to go with.
