Question about 1985 Yamaha XJ 700 X Maxim
I have replaced my battery, checked my starter, and it will crank over but not fire. i arced it at the relay, because the start switch isn't working either
Hi, Steve and the usual suspects are:
1. Fuel tank empty.
2. Fuel supply valve/petcock turned off.
3. Fouled spark plugs.
4. Engine flooded as a result of overuse of the enricher.
5. Vacuum hose to the fuel supply valve/petcock disconnected, broken, cracked, or pinched.
6. Fuel valve/petcock or filter clogged.
7. Fuel line to carburetor or throttle body pinched or kinked.
8. Carburetor float stuck.
9. Fuel injectors clogged.
10. Severely discharged or damaged battery, you need 12.5 volts or better and be able to pass a load test if necessary.
11. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
12. Loose or corroded wire connection at the coil, battery or plug between ignition sensor and module.
Spark plug cables in bad condition and shorting, cable connections loose, or connected to the wrong cylinders.
13. Ignition timing incorrect due to a faulty ignition coil, ignition module or sensors (MAP, CMP, CKP, O2, TPS, ETP, IAC,or BAS).
14. Faulty neutral, clutch lever, or kickstand safety switch.
15. Faulty fuel pump or fuse or relay.
16. Faulty CDI box if applicable.
17. Tilt sensor needs a reset.
18. Security system not disarming alarm needs a reset.

when he jumped it with the charger he probably fan too much curent through the system witch made a relay stick so when you hit the start button it dosnt shut off the kill switch probably went bad because of it also trace the wires from the start button and find the relay that they go to and check it with a multimeeter how they work is it uses a little amount of curent to controle a big amount

The switch is the most likely source of the problem. Check it with a volt ohmmeter. Put the key in off and check the terminals. Next turn the key to the 1st position and check the terminals then on any further positions. The next time the bike self starts is when you want to re-check the switch terminals.
You know, this has all the signs of an internal short in the switch. Just tell the dealer to give you a new switch. Switch failure after 5 hours of riding is simply unacceptable.

Check the wiring inside the headlight case--that's where the wiring for the bar controls are connected into the main wiring harness. Look for loose or corroded connections. Try to get the starter working correctly, then concentrate on getting the engine to run. No-run usually means either no fuel into the cylinders or no spark to ignite the fire. Make sure to keep the battery charged while running the starter for testing.

HI, LETS REMEMBER THE STARTER RELAY IS ONLY A MAGNETIC SWITCH, WHICH WHEN THE STARTER SWITCH IS PRESSED IT OPENS THE CIRCUIT AND ALOWS 12V DC TO COMPLETE THE CIRCUIT TO THE STARTER MOTOR, IF YOU BRIDGE THE 2 THICK WIRES AT THE STARTER RELAY WITH THE IGNITION SWITCHED ON, 1 COMES FROM THE BATERY, AND THE OTHER GOES TO THE STARTER MOTOR, AND YOU HAVE SUFICIANT POWER IN YOUR BATTERY THE ENGINE WILL TURN OVER AND START, THUS ELIMINATING THE RELAY, IF THE STARTER DOES NOT TURN OVER THE ENGINE WHEN YOU DO THIS IT IS LIKELY THE STARTER MOTOR ITSELF IS NOT WORKING CORRECTLY, YOU COULD ALWAYS REMOVE THE WIRE FROM THE RELAY AND PUT IT MOMENTARILY DIRECT TO THE POS SIDE OF THE BATTERY, INSTEAD OF BRIDGING AT THE RELAY, REMEMBER THAT IF THE BIKE RUNS WHEN YOU JUMP START IT, THEN THE PROBLEM IS WITH THE STARTING SIDE , AND NOT THE IGNITION SIDE AS THE IGNITOR IS CONECTED TO THE IGNITION SIDE REPLACING THIS WOULD BE A WASTE OF FUNDS. THESE MACHINES ALSO HAD PROBLEMS EARLY ON WITH STARTER MOTORS & THE STARTER CLUTCH, WHICH IS A ONE WAY CLUTCH LOCATED IN THE LH ENGINE COVER ALONG WITH THE AC GENERATOR
