Shower valve was installed by a homeowner and has never been able to adjust hot/cold water.

I have taken apart and tried several reassembly configurations but with this valve I am not familiar with the proper way to set or reinstall and there are of course not instructions for this single stem valve i can find anywhere. Dave

Product is a Fontaine single stem shower valve

  • Mister Danger Jun 19, 2015

Actually there is quiete a lot of info about "Fontaine" single stem shower brans. You can do a google searck for terms "Fontaine single stem shower valve" - without quotes! - and you'll get quite a los of returns. Most interesting might be the first one you'r get, a grapghic display af some of their models.
Then you may add terma "assembly" and "repair" to specify your query.
Now, aere you sure "Fountaine" is a brand or a type? Who MADE this valve? Try to find a similar valve and try to get a CONTANCT address.

You are asking for help to assemble an unspecified valve, without any instruction. Sorry, but with your description not even Uri Geller cuuld assemble it. To start with, you should have taken a series of photos for each step while you was unassebling it.

Testimonial: "Did not know I could load a picture here. Glad to know Uri Geller could not do it without instructions wither.. i have installed and adjusted dozens of other valves.. this one is not so common.. Not seen a fontaine before and nothing online I could find regarding instructions.. I have pics.. just do not help as it has not worked apparently according to the homeowner since it was new installed 3 years ago in this shower."

Shower force

Are you wanting to change/switch the hot and cold range of the shower or the temperature max and min? As for the range, the Monitor pressure balance valve may be having build up or problems. This valve controls the mixture of hot and cold water. To fix this, you will need to turn off the water supply, take the pipes apart and clean out the valve (I would recommend a professional). As for the max and min, you may just need to check the water heater pressure in your house. It may not be the faucet at all.

Your shower valve has an temp equalizer valve in it, you will have to take it apart, clean all the calcium or debris from it. flush out the hot and cold lines with valve dismantled , cover drain to make sure you don't lose any parts. reassemble with Vaseline. good luck.

No hot water comes out of shower just cold comes out even when turned to hot, sink 2 feet away has hot water

The problem more tha likely lies within the shower valve body. Possibly the shower head has an accumulation of deposits clogging up the holes but that would not affect the hot water supply only. You might try removing the shower head and turning on the hot water. If you get hot, immerse the head in Limeaway for a hour or two and replace it, or install a new head. If you still do not get hot water, the shower valve needs attention. The cartridge inside the valve body will likely need replacing or at the least cleaning (Limeaway), replacing rubber seals and use plenty of silicone grease before re-assembly.

Pull apart the front of the valve and there is a limiter that is set to limit hte hot water, you need to adjust that limiter. I find many valves are shipped with teh setting too cold.

If this is a Moen posi temp valve you may need to adjust the temperature limit stop. It is located under the handle. Usualy a plastic peice with grooves in it so it fits in another peice in the valve. If I remember right you pull this peice out and turn it counter clockwise to get more hot water. Do this in small increments and reassemble and test. I hope this helps.

Not enough hot water, has to do with a shower valve

Hello, first if any water supply hot or cold is turned off, you will experience trickling as you mention. You must have both cold and hot in order to adjust the temperature on your valve. if you had a plumber intall this unit you should ask him to adjust it. Otherwise here is how:
Rotate the handle counterclockwise to stop and let water run till cold water is purged, check
temperature. Rotate handle to off, remove handle parts (see Disassembly in your manual) and temperature limit stop, rotate clockwise to decrease and counterclockwise to increase maximum hot water temperature, reinstall temperature limit stop and handle (TIP: Do not screw handle in until desired maximum temperature is achieved) Repeat steps until desired maximum
temperature is achieved

Water is either hot or cold - no in between.

I found a way to get warm water in the shower, but I'm not sure it qualifies as a solution. After trying everything else I thought that maybe when I was feathering the faucet in the shower toward the cold side so I would get warm water that at a certain point it blocked the flow on the hot water side enough so that the sensor in the hot water heater sensed there was no demand in the line and it shut the water heater off. To test this, I went to the kitchen and turned the kitchen sink faucet all the way to the hot side and then turned it on so that I got a small flow of water. I waited for the water to get hot to be sure the hot water heater was working. Once it was hot, I left it running to keep demand in the line and then I went to the shower and turned the faucet on. When the water got hot I started feathering the control towards the cold side and soon I had warm water. So I think I'm right in that the sensor in the hot water heater was shutting the water heater off when the demand in the shower was lowered to a certain point when I was trying to adjust the water temp in the shower.

So now I can get warm water, but it means I have to leave the hot water running at another fixture in the house to create a false demand in the system so the hot water heater doesn't shut down. Is there a way to adjust the senor in the hot water heater so that it will stay on when I'm using the shower only, so I don't have to waste water by running another faucet when I want to take a shower?
