According to Wikipedia it has the Bosch K-Jetronik fuel system. Therefore, do all the standard tune-up stuff:
1. Good spark plugs like NJK iridium or equivalent
2. Good spark plug wires. Make sure the air filter is clean.
3. set the ignition timing per manual. test the mechanical spark advance and vacuum spark advance to make sure they are working correctly. Use fuel injector cleaner in the gas at fill up time at least once per oil change. Use a good synthetic oil like Mobil 1 etc. of the correct weight for the engine/season. Use good oil filter. add a neodymium magnet to the inside of the oil filter when you change it. This will give you microfiltration and about 5% better fuel economy, and about double oil change period.
4. Make sure your thermostat is operating at the proper temperature. If different temps are available use highest temp option available.
5. Make sure your tires are at the highest pressure recommended by tire manufacture.
6. Make sure your brakes aren't dragging.
7. make sure your tire alignment is good.
8. Make sure your transmission is routinely serviced with proper lubricants for energy efficiency. If it is an automatic keep up with the filter changing/ magnet cleaning schedule.
9. when driving keep speed steady as possible with conditions and use the highest gear compatible with conditions. Anticipate stops for traffic signals and coast down to stops.
Turbocharge it. My dad has a 2007 vw Passat wagon 2.0 it's it has a turbine, gets about 400 miles on the whole tank in the summer, I think. In the winter it should be more because you're not using air conditioning as much
Hello, Noble. I love these cars. Not sure which engine you have, but a common problem with the 1.6 and 2.0 motor is that the air flow sensor malfunctions frequently. If you have an after market air filter that is oil soaked get rid of it and use a dry filter. If you have a turbo, definitely use a dry filter. Make sure that the throttle body is clean and also check the O2 sensors. The rear O2 sensor is the one that usually goes out . The air flow sensor doesn't send an error code, when it fails it sends a rich signal to the ECU. The rich fuel mixture destroys the rear O2 sensor, only then, do you get an error code. A volkswagon major tuning kit has all the components you may need to correct the malfunction. This would include the airflow sensor, O2 sensors, and ignition components. On a budget I would replace the airflow sensor and the rear O2 sensor. I hope this helps you some. Good luck and God bless.
Air up the front tire first.

SOURCE: are VW Golf fuel pumps the same? do they fit in all vw models?
The actual pump is the same, however the pump is part of a fuel pump module aseembly and that is diffrent from year to year and model to model

It is likely the coolant is not reaching operating temperature, please verify the engine thermostat is working.
