L have power to lights, thru starter relay, but not to start button. checked starter- good.

Bike killed while idling, now nothing to starter switch or coils.

Just changed the starter solinoid on my ZZR250 now have no power thru the ignition. Its as dead as a doornail. Checked all fuses in fuse box, also checked the fuse in the solinoid, any ideas? Please


When you say no power through the ignition, do you mean the bike is completely dead with the ignition turned on? Nothing at all works, no lights, brake lights, indicators horn etc.?
If that is the case, then first check that the battery has a charge and the connections are all clean and tight.......and connected the right way round. My bike has a parking light position on the ignition switch and this allows the little parking lights to come on with the key removed. If yours has the same, see if that switches the light on. Do you have a permanent live outlet that you can test? If the battery has power and is connected properly and nothing lights up after doing these checks, then it is either a main fuse or ignition switch problem.

If you do have lights then at least the above is all ruled out and the problem now lies in the starting circuit. Is the kill switch set to run and if so is it working properly? By that, I mean even if it is in the starting position is it actually functioning properly and has clean contacts, all wires connected etc. The same goes for the start button.
At the solenoid there are 2 connections that you will have bolted onto when you changed it. Turn the ignition on and short across these 2 connections with a screwdriver momentarily and see if it spins the starter. If it does then the relay may be faulty. I will attach a youtube link that really explains everything in plain language and is by far the best tutorial I have come across for this type of problem.

My dr200 won't start with the starter motor I've taking it out and tested it and it turns over but when it's in the bike and I push the button nothing happens can anyone please help me out cheers


Sounds like the starter solenoid is not transferring electrical power to the starter, or starter relay (if fitted) is not working. Check for a good engine earth. Connect a test light to the starter terminal and an earth, press the button, if it does not light, follow the cable to the solenoid and test for power to the solenoid from the battery, check earth to solenoid body and using the test light check the small wire has power when the button is pushed, if no then you are looking at the relay. Silly question, have you checked the side stand switch, kill switch and neutral switch. These all break the power to the starter solenoid. If you bridge any of these switches, please ensure the bike is in neutral. Good Luck

Check for power to the starter when starter button is pressed. Also check to make sure your kill switch isn't stuck.

1981 yamaha midnight special 850cc. starter button and kill switch not working but lights etc are working. no power from the start button. battery fully chaged? started after chaging the throttle cable.


If no power going to kill switch check Ignition fuse, sidestand ,clutch & neutral switches.
If all OK suspect the starter cut-out relay

My husband will press on the start and nothing happens. It was just random but now nothing.


Maybe you ought to press the button. No seriously, if everything else on the bike is working correctly, you could have a bad starter relay. There may be more than two relays on the bike but one is a starter relay. When you press the start button, the relay should energize and send power to the starter solenoid. The relay is a cube about one inch in dimension. Usually located under the seat. You'd need a wiring diagram to test to see which wire power from the start button was coming from.

Usually most relays have a schematic drawn right on them. Look at the relay and find the "coil" connections. Using either a test light or a DVOM (digital volt ohm meter) , test to see if you're getting power to the "coil" of the relay. Turn the ignition switch on, insert the probe of the test light or meter and press the start button. The test light should light up or the meter should indicate battery voltage at this connection. If so, replace the relay as either the coil is bad or the contacts for the starter circuit are bad. If not voltage, your start switch may be bad.

Sprint 900 '96 Won't start.did three weeks ago,tried another battery-nothing.starter relay clicks when power applied directly,side stand switch seems to be ok


If no click from starter relay from switch, check kill switch is off first, then clutch switch, ignition fuse, contacts inside the switch (may be corroded or dirty) check by undoing the wiring connector from the left switchgear & check continuity across the start switch & across the kill switch,also check for continuity from start switch to relay

Starting fault


There are two safety switches that you may need to test. 1) Neutral safety switch- this switch is what tells the bike that it's in neutral and allows the starter to engage. 2) Kickstand safety switch- this switch will not allow the bike to run in gear if the kickstand is down. My initial guess is the neutral safety switch. If the neutral safety switch is bad, then you will not be able to start the bike with the kickstand down because the bike thinks that it's in gear (even if in neutral). This also may explain why the initial intermitent problem of not starting when warm since the metal contacts will expand and possibly not make contact when warmed up. Are you trying to start the bike with the kickstand up or down? If it were the kickstand safety switch, the bike would probably start okay and then die when you put it in gear.
