SOURCE: starter motor does not seem to engage all the time

Your starter solenoid/starter motor is going bad and needs to be replaced/rebuilt.

Usually it is the Solenoid as the contacts get burnt/eaten away, and not enough current can flow through it.

Hi, Mike before testing any electrical component in the Starting System it is "IMPERATIVE" that you have a fully charged battery of 12.5 volts or more and be able to pass a proper "LOAD" test if necessary, you may have a preliminary reading of 12.5 volts or more but little or zero amperage, the battery is faulty and must be replaced. AGM type batteries fall into this scenario more so than lead acid batteries.
1. Ignition Switch not in the "ON" position.
2. Engine Run Switch in the "OFF" position.
3. Check the battery terminals for damage or corrosion check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter.
4. Bank angle sensor needs a reset or is faulty.
5. FOB battery low or dead.
6. Faulty ignition switch.

MY PLYMOUTH GRAND VOYAGER 'S HEADLIGHT'S AND DASH LIGHTS WORK, BUT THE ENGINE WON'T TURN OVER. THERE IS NO SPARK COMING FROM THE ELECTRICAL WIRES.

When you say no spark, are you talking about the spark plugs, or just the general wiring?

If the engine won't turn over, then it isn't moving, and if it isn't moving then you need to check the following in this order:

1) Does the battery have power i.e. around 12.4 volts or over? No? Charge, test or replace battery.

2) Do the car's head lights dim considerably if turned on when attempting to crank? Yes? Possible lack of battery charge or faulty battery.

3) Assuming the battery is fine, can you turn the dash warning lights on and off with the key? No? Faulty ignition switch.

4) Is there a click sound when you turn the key, but no starter motor spin? Check starter motor connections or replace starter motor.

If none of the above prove to be of help, then please report.

My 2004 Honda Pilot ran fine then a hour later won't start. At first thought battery so we charged up usig one of those chargers you plug in. Lights flicker, and clicking sounds but won't turn

Check batry terminals are secure & free from corosion, check security of earth strap to engine & main power wire on starter, if ok have the batry load tested to ensure it can perform under load as the starter needs a lot of current. Have you tried a jump start?

Engine won't turn over and i just charged the battery

Check that the sidestand switch and the clutch switch are working. If you get a click when you press the start button then you have different problems. ie the starter motor may have failed.

Stop on stop sign engine died

If the engine won't fire up, but your starter turns over, you may want to check your timing unless you have a check engine light on. If the CEL light is on, have the codes scanned.

If the engine won't turn over with the starter or it clicks, have your battery tested at autozone or advanced auto parts. Replace the battery if it is bad. Else, have your starter tested.

If the engine still won't turn over and the battery and starter are tested fine, you may have a blown fuse, bad ignition switch, or a failed relay.

If the engine fires up but randomly dies and starts back up, you either have a failed sensor, failing fuel pump, clogged fuel filter, bad plugs or wires, or a failing ECU.

Hello, my LGTH2454 has been running fine. It sat for about an hour then I went to start it and the starter engaged on the flywheel but won't turn. I took the starter off and tested it. It seems to...

Sounds to me like the battery hasn't enough charge to turn the engine. Taking the starter off and testing it doesn't require much power as it doesn't have to turn the engine. Check the battery and also that the charging system is charging the battery back up. Alex.

Engine won.t turn

hi can you turn engine over by hand [engine s not sezied ] and how did you test the battery and how did you test starter because if the engines not seized and you put a jump lead from your positive terminal off a good battery to a starters main terminal and it wont, turn over the starters faulty or there is no engine earth so connect the other jump lead from the negative battery teminal to the engine block and try again it will turn over if the starters good if the starter turns over with the jump leads check the small terminal on the starters wire is live when someone turns the ignition key if it is and the starter does not turn over then the soleniod on the starter is faulty if no live at small terminal then the ignition switch or starter relay are faulty best of luck yates2104546

I have a 97 honda odyssey and it won't turn over. The battery is fine. There is a recall for the ignition switch which has not been replaced. How do I test to see where the problem lies?

hi if you lift your bonnet [make sure the igntion is not on and its out of gear ]get a lenth of wire connect a clip to one end connect it to the live terminal on your battery be carfull not to let the other end touch the engine block or any ground find your starter remove the small wire off the starter just pulls off keep your hands out of the rotating parts on the engine just touch the the bare terminal showing it should turn over if this does just replace the wire go inside of the car [starters ok] take the lower cowling off under the ignition switch get a test light connect one end to a good ground find the terminals on the back of the switch and one at a time go through the terminals with the test lead one at a time some will be live with the auxillary position some live with the ignition on and the last one should be live if you hold the ignition switch held over if none of these are live when the switch is held over the switch is faulty if they are ok and you are sure the batterys good you need to find the starter relay as it will be faulty yates210456
