Smoking is a bad sign. Probably damaged the battery and it needs to be replaced. If you are talking about the cable, I would check continuity and if it is grounding properly and potentially replace that . If you suspect the cable, you can check by taking a jumper cable, only clamping the negative terminal and then putting the other negative clamp on something ground, like the engine or frame (try a few different spots). If it starts up fine using using this jumper cable trick, you are not getting good ground.

SOURCE: Breaking Down

The problem may be a pinched fuel or vacuum hose, or a weak/collapsed vacuum hose. The problem may be varnished fuel/carburetors. It may be an electrical problem: loose connector or defective conductor. I cannot help you other than this without having the Duc and performing a few tests. The Monsters are fun to ride.

Why does my 86 yamaha fz600 get hot and smoke very quickly?

Air cooled bike engines do get very hot... The thing I need to know is what does your spark plugs look like? A bike that had sat for a year may collect oils, etc and smoke a bit until all is burnt off. However if you are certain this smoke is above and beyond a reasonable amount there are a couple items to check. Are the correct spark plugs on the bike, check for vacume leaks, did you check float height?
Do you have a way to check engine temps? And by smoke do you mean off the engine or out the pipes?

Hi, Candice and the usual suspects are:
1. Oil tank/pan overfilled.
2. Restricted oil return line to oil tank/pan.
3. Restricted breather operation.
4. Restricted oil filter.
5. Piston rings badly worn or broken.
6. Valve guides worn and or seals worn, crushed, missing, or have come of guide and are literally pumping oil through the valve guide.
7. O-ring damaged or missing from oil pump at crankcase junction (also results in poor engine performance). For more information about your issue and valuable "FREE" downloads that you will need please click on the links below. Good luck and have a nice day.

Small gas leak on 2005 Honda VTX1300R

I would suspect and look for any cracked or damaged rubber or other flexible type gas line/s from or to the tank, and where they connect to. That would be the 1st most probable location of leaks. Then the tank or carburetor/injectors.

83 honda cx650 smoking one day not the next

The sputtering was a bit of water in the bad gas you got and the smoke was probably from a bit of diesel fuel that was put into a gasoline storage tank in error. The temp guage going bad is just one of those things that happen from time to time, probably just a bad sensor. The idle speed change is a bit quirky but easy to adjust. Stick a fresh set of plugs in the bike and the starting problem should clear up.

A “very helpful” rating for this answer? Thanks!

Gas leak

All gas tanks have a vent to let air in to replace the gas as you use it, ussually in the cap. Most have a one-way valve so air can get in but gas can't get out, you found out why when the bike went horizontal. But if the gas gets hot, it builds a bit of pressure and your vent is leaking slightly. That's the whistle you hear and why the fuel spilled. A new cap should fix it.
