Hi Michael:
Interesting. You're right on with the necessities of a running engine...... spark..... and gas.
Sputtering like it was out of gas...... Had you just fuelled up? Possible contaminated fuel?
Drain the carb into a glass jar and check the fuel.
No spark but coils are good..... How do you know the coils are good? Try pulling the plugs to see if they are fouled. Check to see if you have spark at the plugs.
It's too rainy to ride on vancouver Island today, at least for an old dude like me.

you may have a safety switch that has went bad or came unhooked. unplug and test for continuity. also under the hood you will see a fuse, check to see if that has blown. if all that is good you may want to unhook the coil try to start it and see if it has fire. it is possible the coil has went bad. hope this gives you an idea where to start

Chances are there is a water build up in the carb float bowls. The water comes from condensation in the gas tank. Try draining the carbs. Another possibility is carburetor main jets partially plugged up. You must clean the carbs if plugged jets are found to be the problem. Please rate my answer. Thanks. tombones49_152.gif

Wat makes my bike not fire

four things make a bike not fire: poor fuel delivery, fuel pump or clogged fitler or jets; spark- coils going bad, compression problem, or low battery voltage, 12.5v nominal.. bikes will start with 12.2v though. if your bike will pushstart and then sputters, it might just be the battery. try a trickle charge for about 8 hours, if it runs good, then you know its the battery. Everytime i've had this problem i changed the battery and it worked fine, except on one occasion...one of my pickup coils was fried! if you have a carburated bike, i would recomend pouring in half can of seafoam into 3 gallons fuel and pushstart it.check for a glogged fuel filter in fact take it out and clean it and pour seafoam directly in the filter and into the main fuel line.it might sputter for a will because its cleaning out the jets! ride it for at least a good 20 miles to work it though the system. also have you check your fuel pump fuse?

Please check if the battery takes the self starter. Then we will check if there is good bluish spark at the plug point and if gas is reaching the carb or not. If gas and current reach the cylinder head then the bike has to start.

Runs then sputters and wont start

you might need to clean you stator(altinator) or maybe get a new one for you spark to work right if you have already changed the coil.also bad gas can do it also or low fuel.when the tank is low put your bike gas valve on reserve.A friends bike was running badly and all i did was put it on reserve cause the tank was low and the bike ran great after that.

well, if plugs are wet, try placing plugged in spark plug on the block, turn ingine, should spark blue. orange no good, none no. good lol.do both plugs and wires.if one works and the other one doesnt, you need a new plug.if both no good, having electronic ignition, most likely the coil is toast (make sure its plugged in good, cables and wires)

Bike is sputtering in high 2nd/3rd gear, best kind in idle

Sounds like a lean condition. Spark plug should be a tan brown.
I would say the carb probably wasn't drained prior to storage and your main jet is gummed up. Gas deteriorates very quickly especially in vented containers like the float bowl of a carb.
clean your carb for sure.
