A switch operates in 2 different ways, either opening a circuit or closing a circuit. Try disconnecting the wires and riding off. if this works then the switch operates by closing the circuit and when not connected is open. If that doesn't work then connect the 2 wires together and try riding again. If this works then the switch operates by opening the circuit so by shorting it you are closing the circuit. There is also a switch operated by the clutch. Find this and do the same to see if any of the combination of operations help.

Why does my 2012 R1200RT stall when putting it in gear?

Is the sidestand down? These bikes have a kill switch in the sidestand that will kill the engine if it is down and you put the bike in gear. If the sidestand is not down, you may have a bad or stuck safety switch.

are you sure that the sidestand switch has been correctly bypassed...if it has then the problem will be the starter circuit cut-off relay

I have no history on this 1990 virago I bought yesterday. Its been stood for I don't know how long. Checks out ok but starter button doesnt work

There are a few safety interlocks on most Yamaha street bikes.
The starter circuit will only operate if:
the bike is in neutral and the neutral light indicates this OR
if the bike is in gear (or neutral light not showing) you must have the clutch pulled in and the sidestand must be up (there is a clutch lever switch and a sidestand switch )
The engine stop switch "kill switch" on right handlebar has to be in the RUN position to allow starter cranking.

When i start the bike and warm it up everything is cool, then i put it in gear and it quits running

there are safety switches on the clutch and sidestand, so you cant ride off with the stand down, one of those may be faulty, unplugged or have a wire broken

Engine stalls when the bike is put into gear

Clutch not disengaging ? This is a very vague description. With motorcycles coming in both standard (clutch) and automatic more information would be helpful.

Engine Stalls when put in Gear, Suzuki GSX-R 1000 K3 (2003)

Most of the safety systems use a diode pack in the loom to stop clutch and side stand switch etc from back feeding each other. Maybe this has failed. If not could it be in the loom, a broken or shorted wire. Look for a tight bend in the route the loom runs and external damage to the tape.

Bike runs in neutral but cuts out when a gear is selected.

Your sidestand switch kills the engine if the bike is put in gear with the sidestand down. If your stand is up and this is happening either the switch is broken or out of position. If it is broken you can twist the wires together until you can replace the switch. If it is just bent out of position you can bend it back carefully.

I have an 03 Honda 750 Shadow. I start the bike in nuetral and then put it in gear and it dies. It dies instantly.

Your kickstand switch is either broken or out of position. The bike kills the engine as a safety feature if it thinks the sidestand is down and the bike is put in gear while the engine is running.
