Sounds like you need a new starter or flywheel pull starter off and look inside at the flywheel and see if any teeth are chipped.

My starter won't stop running after the car startswhat causes this

I need to know year--make--model?
Sometimes you can take starter motor off, lay in on the ground, hook up jumper cables properly from starter motor to battery, at the least, it should kick out drive gear and spin. When cables are removed the drive gear should retract. Could be something wrong with starter? It could be hung-up on flywheel for some reason? Could be a problem with ignition switch?
Usually two voltage circuits to starter motor, one comes from battery, hot all the time. The other circuit goes hot with key in the start position. The start position should be spring loaded, when you release the key, it should spring back to run position, so that circuit, at starter motor, is no longer hot.

My lawn tractor(model#502.255190 or193)keeps blowing solenoids.Except for the hot wire going to the battery there are only two wires. One(red) goes to towards the engine and has a fuse. The other wire

check the voltage to the solenoid coil when attampting to start the engine, you can also remove the 10ga. wire from the starter and check it that way too. with the starter motor spinning your voltage to the solenoid coil (the small wires) should be no less than 8-9 volts. With the starter spinning voltage to the starter should be about the same, anything less and you could be dealing with a bad connection at the battery, solenoid or the wire ends themselves. Of course all of this is assuming the battery is healthy and fully charged, weak batteries kill starter motors and starter solenoids, it makes them get real hot and fail prematurely.

I have a 2001 yard machine riding mower that cuts off when it gets warm and has no electric

Symptoms would lead me to the coil. They get hot, and die. If it doesn't re-start hot but will after cooling down then its a 99% coil issue

Also after it shuts down and u turn the key to try to start it back up is the starter engaging and trying to spin the motor or are you getting nothing.
If the starter isn't doing anything it could be the starter or relay between ignition switch and starter.
If the starter is engaging and the motor is trying to turn over it could a weak starter or it could be a build up of compression not letting the starter spin it over that a valve adjustment would help. The temp change from cold to hot is sometimes enough make the valves expand and not open enough to release compression for start up.

When the car is hot, the starter drags, but wont start. I heard something about a heat shield ?? How can I fix this ?

An older starter will sometimes fail to turn over when hot because the armature bushing expand and are too tight for the armature to spin. At this point it is time for a new or rebuilt starter. Shielding it will not really help because it is bolted to the engine and as the engine gets hot the heat will transfer to the starter through conduction and it still will not start.

Hope this helps.

After motor work starter runs when power applied

sounds like starter solenoid is staying energized sending continued power to starter. need to make sure you plugged the right wire from the starter button and not another hot wire w/ fulltime hot. also if thats ok need to test for power turning off to solenoid when releasing button. if thats ok try tapping on solenoid. lastly, make sure your positive cable from battery is hooked to starter solenoid, then another hot cable(longer) hooks from solenoid to starter, if you hook long hot cable directly from starter to battery, starter will continueous spin.
