Question about Motorcycles

1 Answer

Won't shift through gears. Won't shift into neutral. Clutch is working fine. Got it into neutral once started and ran fine. Just changed oil that meets all specs.

Hi Dennis did you drain the oil from the sump plug? Or is it possible you may have mixed up the gear position plunger. It's a similar plug except it has a spring and a ball to keep the selector drum in each gear.

I'll look into that. This motor has three sumps and one oil for all. there was nothing with a spring and ball. thank you.

Transmission Question

It sounds to me like the transmission is starting to fail. As the clutches inside the transmission wear the clutch pack gains additional clearance. Your pressures in the transmission will be higher with cold oil so it has a tendency to build a bit of extra pressure, but it's also slower in flowing through the transmission. This results in a harder hitting first gear. As the transmission warms up, it will reduce the viscosity of the oil and work fine. Cold weather kills automatic transmissions. Let it warm up before driving it or it won't last long. It will require an overhaul soon.

Hard to shift my gears when car in cold.Won't even go out of neutral to 1st gear.Forget about going into reverse.

With the engine off, check your operation of the gear shift. If you can go in and out of the gears fine without the engine running, then you have a worn clutch disc that needs replaced. If the problem still exists then you either have low fluid/weak hydraulic system, or there is a problem with the syncro that may be adjusted.

I have a rav4 that won?t go into gear once the engine is started. If the engine is off it will go into gear. So every time I have to stop I must turn off my car put it in first and then start it again....

Change the gear oil. If the gear oil is leaking get it fixed as soon as possible. If all the oil has leaked then it may have severely damaged the gear box.
