Hi Patrick, could be a number of places. With the ignition switch on and the run stop switch is in the run position take a test lite and check for power across all circuit breakers and that all connections are clean and tight and no broken or damaged wires. Then check for power at the coil this would be the white wire. Then check for power going into ignition module white wire and that the module has a good ground, it won't work if it is not grounded properly. There is a 3 wire harness coming out of module with a red, green, and black wire, check the red wire for power at the timing sensor located behind the timing cover which has 2 rivets holding it in place you will have to drill them out. If the test lite fails at any of these points track the wires back to a known good source and look for broken, cut , or pinched wires and repair as necessary also check all connector blocks a nd connector pins in the block these pins can fail frequently. Make sure you are grounding the spark plug threads when checking for spark and that the electrode is clean and dry. If every thing checks out then check the coil for proper voltage remove blue wire and hook up a volt meter between the coil and ground it should read the same voltage as your fully charged battery within half a volt. Also make sure your run stop switch is in the run position. If the coil checks out then it's either the timing sensor or ignition module, start by replacing the timing sensor first. If you have points replace condensor. Hope this helps good luck

SOURCE: oil blow out the breather

An overfull oil tank will do it. Even if not overfull just about all harley's will blow oil out the air filter. Unless there is a bunch of oil coming out, it's not a problem What I've found is that the air filter eventually gets saturated and then starts to leak through. The level in the oil tank doesn't seem to matter. If you change the air filter the problem goes away, until the new one gets saturated and then it starts all over again. My plan is to get a K&N air filter, which you can clean yourself and save having to buy a new air filter every 4,000 miles or so.

First: you unscrew the cable housing assembly from the back of the speedomiter housing. Second: you pull the speedomiter cable from the housing. If the cable is broken inside the housing you must unscrew the housing from the spedomiter adaptor on the front axle,. at this point you should be able to pull the broken end from the adaptor with a pair of pliersif you can't pull it at this point you will have to pull the front axle and take the adaptor out and try to remove the broken end. This is a common problem on all sportsters, they have an oil blow by that dumps it into the air filter. I have found that if I run about a half quart low the problem goes away.

My 2000 harley sporster 1200 just quit, seem to be turning over but wont start, im thinking its not getting spark or something any sugestions?

I had the same prob with my sporty. Did you recently have it on reserve? If so check to lake sure it "clicked" back into run when you turned it back. Did you pull your plugs ? They should be grayish. Chech wires for spark

Wifes harley 2007 1200L sporster, started ran about 4 miles turned bike off. went to start back started but wounld not run acted like it jump timing, was spitting and popping, now starter starter wont spin...

Take the spark plugs out of the engine and see if the engine turns over then. If it does but the engine will not turn over with the plugs in it, have the battery checked. Never assume a battery is good because it's not very old.

If the engine will not turn over with the spark plugs out, it sounds like may have serious problems. In this case, I'd consult a professional mechanic.
