Question about 2005 Harley Davidson FXDL - FXDLI Dyna Low Rider
Started my bike and noticed that the tachometer was wasnt working. How do I fix this?
Hi Larry, it could be a wiring problem, open, shorts or ground. Ignition module not sending the pulse to move the needle or the tach itself is bad. First I would go to www.officialharleyparts.com and download the wiring diagram for the 2006 Dyna the wire color codes will be the same. Then you can check the wiring and conections with a test lite. Next I would go to www.fuelmotousa.com/harleycodes.html actually you might want to do this first before the wiring. Good luck

Hi Larry, you need to eliminate the posibilities ie. bad tach, bad ignition module, bad wiring or conections, and my personal favorite blown instrument gauge fuse which should be in the top right hand corner of one of the fuse blocks. If the fuse is blown replace it and have a nice day. If the fuse looks good your going to need a test lite to check 2 major wires. First hook the lite up to a good ground and touch a power source or battery positive to make sure the lite works (very important) and you have a good connection. Then turn on ignition switch and check the fuse clips at both ends, it should lite both times. The wire coming off the fuse going to the tach should be orange and you need to stab it 1" from the fuse and 1" from the tach, if it lites both times you have a good power wire, if not start checking the connector pins in the connector blocks and the wire itself for opens, shorts, and grounds. Next connect test lite to a power source or battery positive and touch a good known ground or battery negative to make sure test lite works and you have a good connection ( very important) stab the black wire 1" from the tach and follow the wire to where it grounds and stab it 1" from that connection. If it lites twice you have a good ground wire, it it doesn't well you know what to do. The last wire you can check is the pulse or data link wire that is light green with a violet stripe and this ones a bit dicey, your going to need an ohm meter and 2 alligator clips. set the ohm meter to its lowest setting and touch the positive and negative leads together the meter should read zero. Next turn off the ignition switch and disconnect the wiring harness connector block to the ignition module and find the pin thats connected to the light green wire with the violet stripe, hook up an alligator clip to this pin and connect any lead from the ohm meter to the clip. Disconnect your test lite and clip on the other lead from the ohm meter to the ice pick part of the lite and stab the pulse wire 1" from the tach, the meter should read zero or very close to it. if it doesn't well you know what to do. If all this wire testing passes muster then you either have a bad tach or bad ignition module. Since both of these objects are pricey, I would call your local service dept. and get their best guess. I hope it was just a fuse and all this other stuff wasn't necessary, but you can use this type of electrical diagnosis on future problems. Good Luck
