Question about Suzuki Motorcycles

I have a 96 suzuki intruder 1400. Got a new fully charged battery on it, but the starter is cranking slow, as if it were to have a low battery. Any thoughts.....

The brushes in the starter most likely wore out.

SOURCE: Clutch bleed on a Suzuki 1400 Intruder 2000

One the left-hand side of the bike (facing forward), there is cover plate just ahead of the drive shaft. Remove that cover (mine has 8mm bolts). The bleeder valve is under this cover. Go to an auto parts store and get a "one man bleeder kit" or if you have some plastic tubing that will fit over the valve, you can use that and a clean jar. Follow the instructions on the bleeder kit, or if you're using the jar and tubing, fill the jar about a quarter of the way with break fluid (use DOT4, but never DOT5!). Take the cover off the master cylinder up at the handlebars, place the tube over the end of the bleed valve (after loosening it a turn or two. Place the other end of the tube down in the break fluid in the jar. Work the clutch lever until you stop getting bubbles in the jar. Be sure to keep the fluid level up in the reservoir. Tighten the bleeder valve, remove the tubing, top off the fluid and replace the covers.

Be careful not to get brake fluid on anything. It will eat paint and mess up other things.

It's most likely the connection to the battery. The screws dont tighten in well and you get the famous clicking....I replaced the stock philips screws with a hex bolt and after two years of trying to solve the problen have been starting everytime for the past year no problems. Another gie away is the intermitant starting problem gets worse when wet.

Did you sync the two carbs? If not the rear may be getting all the gas from the rear carb and none to the front. Twist throttle engine off and see if front carb cable is pulling the carb open.
Also unscrew the spark plug boot from the front spark plug wire and trim 1/8th inch off the wire and screw the boot back in. The plug wire end may be corroded on that wire.

1995 SUZUKI 1400 INTRUDER STARTER DOES NOT ENGAGE ONLY BUZZING SOUND


Hi, Robin before testing any electrical component in the Starter System it is "IMPERATIVE" that you have a fully charged battery of 12.5 volts or more and be able to pass a proper "LOAD" test if necessary, you may have a preliminary reading of 12.5 volts or more but little or zero amperage, the battery is faulty and must be replaced. AGM type batteries fall into this scenario more so than lead acid batteries.
A motorcycle starter relay is an electronic mechanical switch that has a small coil winding around a piece of metal that requires low amperage and thin wires to be activated. When you turn on your ignition switch power 12 volts is sent to the relay coil which in turn becomes a magnetic contact point that pulls a spring-loaded contact point to itself completing an electrical circuit that allows more amperage necessary to be accessed by the starter solenoid which in turn acts in the same way as the relay but on a larger scale with its stronger heavier contacts making available the necessary amperage to turn the starter motor. If your battery has low voltage it, in turn, makes the magnetic contact point weak in trying to pull its counterpart to make a connection. These relays are usually encased in a plastic housing that may or may not be sealed depending on the quality of the product. When activated they will produce a small amount of heat to their metal components which in turn can create the perfect environment for condensation to form depending on weather conditions and how careless you may be with a water hose or sprayer while washing your bike. After a period of time, several months to several years depending on the circumstances this condensation is the starter button for electrolysis and the slow build up of corrosion which ends by preventing the magnetic contacts in making a solid connection and alerts you to this situation with the customary greeting "CLICK or BUZZING". The relay is inexpensive and needs to be replaced however in a pinch they can be forcibly opened cleaned and resealed with silicone. In a nutshell, motorcycle starter relays take in low amperage and send out higher amperage when activated and for curious minds, the voltage remains constant at whatever your battery reads at the time.

1997 Suzuki Intruder 1400 won't start


Hi, Mo and the usual suspects are:
1. Ignition Switch not in the "ON" position.
2. Engine Run Switch in the "OFF" position.
3. Discharged battery, needs to be 12.5 volts or better and be able to pass a "LOAD" test, your battery may show 12.5 volts but has little or zero amps and must be replaced.
4. Check the battery terminals for damage or corrosion check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter.
5. Bank angle sensor needs a reset or is faulty.
6. FOB battery low or dead.
7. Faulty ignition switch.
8. Faulty starter button.
9. Faulty kickstand or clutch pull in switch/sensor.
10. Security alarm needs a reset.
11. Starter relay, solenoid or starter circuit wiring faulty.
12. Starter armature or field coils have failed.
13. Main fuse or circuit breaker may be blown or faulty.
14. The electric starter is working but starter clutch has failed.
15. Check for engine trouble codes.

1400 suzuki intruder electrical failure


The clutch safety switch on the handle bars might be bad. I changed mine when I had this problem and had no problems after this. Hope this helps.

I can charge the battery on my 96 suzuki intruder vs1400 all night. The next day it starts fine, but when I drive it, it will die on me, & it wont start brcause the battery is dead!


The obvious problem would be your altenator that is not charging. Attach a volt meter to your batter and run the engine. The volt meter should go up to around 14 volts when you rev the engine above about 2000 RPM. If it does not rise, the alternator in not functioning.

It's electrical problem, it seems like something is draining your bike's battery, not letting enough current to go to starter for a strong engine cranking, I suspect there might be a short circuit within the ignition switch and/or wiring, as you said the bike keeps running even with the key out.

My 1999 Suzuki intruder 1400 dies when I put on the turn signal. It doesnt do it at higher RPMs, just when it is at idle or above. I assume it to be a bad ground, but all the signals test out. Any advice?


Check the Voltage at the battery whilst the engine is running, it should be around 13 to 14 volts. If it is 12 volts you might not be charging the battery, when you put the indicator on the low voltage will drop out the Ignition - very typical Suzuki.

Double check your battery cells are good, could be a starter soleniod issue but also check fuses.
