Just replaced starter on1993 softail. Worked fine for a day then all of a sudden just clicking. Took derby cover off and lined gears up and fired right up!! What's wrong here??? Help!!!

See if there is a brass bushing that may be worn oblong and causing a miss alignment or worn shaft

According to the Harley shop here, your numbers are as follow:
Primary chain - 40007-36B
Primary cover gasket - 60539-94B
Derby Cover gasket - 25416-99X or C

SOURCE: starter works but gears seem to free spin, wont crank engine

sounds like the sprag clutch has failed. If you can see the large gear that sits behind the rotor and its turning but the rotor isnt turning the sprag clutch has failed. Very costly. usualy you would have a missed start eg not engaging every now and then before this fails all together.

Yes it can be faulty starter relay.Its actually starter relay.The relay gets power from battery and gives voltage to starter.If this relay gets faulty then starter will not start as it should.If the relay checks out ok then it can be loose battery terminals or dirty corroded battery terminals,that needs to be removed and cleaned.The relay is 12 volt part. If the relay is doing all those things but it still won't start, you'll need to look elsewhere like a bad starter/solenoid, loose or corroded battery cables. You my also want to check for 12v to the relay from the start switch. the location of starter relay is Under the battery box on the right side of the bike. It is the black module that is screwed to the box.

CHECKING THE STARTER "RELAY" The starter relay's function is to take the small current switch of your starter button, and close another switch that lets a large amount current go the the starter motor. It (usually) has 4 terminals on it. Two of them are low current (or low "tension"), and the other two are high current (high tension). Assuming the kill switch is on RUN, when you press the START button, do you hear the relay "CLICK?" If you don't, the problem may either be with the wiring leading to and from the relay, or it may be a bad relay.
Here's how you test the relay after you've determined you didn't hear any click(assuming your battery is charged): · Disconnect the high current lead that goes from the relay to the starter motor (it's usually bolted to the relay) · Hook up each of your multimeter probes to the two high current leads on the relay to test for continuity (Ohms) · Turn the key to the "ON" position and the kill switch to the "RUN" position and be sure the bike is in NEUTRAL. Press the starter button. If the relay "clicks" and the meter reads 0 (zero) Ohms, the relay should be ok. · If you heard no click or the meter doesn't read real close to 0 Ohms, let go of the start switch. Disconnect all wires from the relay (mark them so you know where they go back on).Measure the resistance between the two low current leads (where the small wires went) on the relay, if it's infinity, the relay is probably bad. If it's zero (literally) then the relay is probably bad.If its checked ok then the starter motor and starter solenoid are the faulty/weak part causing the issue.-----------------this will help.Thanks.Helpmech.

Replaced starter on 93 softail and started right up then just clicking. Took derby off and lined gears and started and been starting! What could be problem? Been starting since I did that!


You may have damage to one tooth on the ring gear and was unlucky that this tooth lined up onto the pinion gear and stopped the solenoid from pulling in fully. Also, the bush in the primary housing cover may have worn and has a lip on it which can catch the shaft when it pulls in. I have got this fault a few times on elderly bikes. If the fault has cleared, I would not go looking unless it happens again. If it does, rock the bike in gear to more the ring gear and if it works straight afterwards, it is more than likely the ring gear.

2002 r6 makes a grinding noise when i try to start it


as long as all gears and shaft are correct, i would replace the starter motor, sounds like thesolenoid is no good.

My derbi mulhacen is not starting and the starter relay is making a clicking noise when i go to start it, could it be the starter motor?


Hi, Anonymous and the usual suspects are:
1. Ignition Switch not in the "ON" position.
2. Engine Run Switch in the "OFF" position.
3. Discharged battery, check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
4. Bank angle sensor tripped and ignition/light key switch not cycled to the "OFF" position and then back to the "ON" position.
5. Faulty starter button/switch.
6. Faulty jiffy stand or clutch pull in switch/sensor.
7. Security alarm needs a reset.
8. Starter control circuit, relay, or solenoid faulty.
9. Electric starter shaft pinion gear is not engaging or over-running starter clutch slipping.

Hi, Anonymous the starter drive/Bendix is a mechanical gear driven component that engages the clutch pack ring gear to turn over the engine. It has an internal mechanism that allows the gear to turn in one direction and once the engine starts allows the drive gear to free spin. If gear free spins in both directions then the drive gear has failed it is not serviceable and needs to be replaced. Put a starter on a 95 heritage softail....replaced battery wires and checked battery...the jack shaft does engage everytime i try to start it...but does if i pull gear off jack shaft it fires...put gear on...


Hi Harlee_huny, first when checking anything in the starter circuit you must make sure the battery connections are clean and tight especially the negative cable at both ends and has a 12.5 volt or better charge. It must not fall below 9 volts during the cranking procedure with a volt meter hooked up. If it does fall below 9 volts do a proper load test on the battery and replace if necessary. Second replace the starter relay cheap $6 or at least do a continuity test on it and make sure it's well grounded and getting 11.5 volts or better to activate. Third remove the back cover of the starter solenoid and de-arc/refurbish the contact plate and shoes making sure they are tight. If it still chatters replace the solenoid. Transmission quantity,primary quantity for 2005 softail deluxe


The transmission of your Softail holds 20-24 ounces of oil. Stand the bike straight up and remove the large plug on the clutch release mechanism cover on the right hand side of the transmission. There's a dipstick on the plug. The oil level should be between the lines. To fill the primary, remove the derby cover and stand the bike straight up. Fill the primary through the derby cover until the oil comes up to the bottom of the clutch outer drum assembly, approximately 36-44 ounces. Both came filled with H-D Syn 3 20W50 synthetic engine oil.

Starter motor just whines and wont start

Replaced starter gear then torqued to 5 lbs,fired up,fine? replaced primary and now wont start?


Well, first off....Dont try starting it anymore without the primary, it can damage the gears. The problem you describe is common with custom builds. I'll assume you purchased the correct stock jackshaft for your model and installed the lock plate and everything else correctly. You can tighten the jackshaft bolt to 7-9lbs. Your last step is putting a wrench on the assembly and pulling it out and turning 1/4 turns to make sure its not binding, as a last resort you can bevel the jackshaft bushing on the out primary so it goes in smoothly - thats what I did on mine and it works like a charm.
