Will not activate unless I short out the ground with a screw driver, then it works and starts fine. Why?

You have a shorted wiring harness, check at the rear of the vehicle undercarriage first for a damaged wiring harness that is cut or worn through on frame or other metal surface. There is no magic fix for shorted wiring, just hard work and close examination.

Do the wipers work ? Fuse for wipers is same as washer pump .
Principles of Operation
The wiper motors receive inputs from the following:
  • Multi-function switch
  • Powertrain control module (PCM)
  • Ignition switch
  • Smart junction box (SJB)
The following components are integrated in the wiper motors:
  • Windshield wiper motor module
  • High/low speed relay
  • Run/park relay
  • Washer pump relay
  • Park sense (Hall-effect sensor)
Washer System
The windshield washer and the rear window washer are activated by the internal wiper motor modules when it receives a ground from the multi-function switch between the washer inputs. Depending on the correct ground, the internal wiper motor modules activate either the windshield washer or rear window washer relays (internal) by grounding the respective relay coil. When either module is activated, it connects voltage to the washer pump while the deactivated module provides ground to the washer pump. In this manner, voltage polarity is reversible to achieve directional change of the washer pump and washer fluid.
  • The washer pump is inoperative

Driver Seat Module
The power driver seat and power exterior mirrors are controlled by the driver seat module (DSM) only when the vehicle is equipped with the programmable/recall memory option.
On the Expedition Limited, the power fold exterior mirror option is controlled by the DSM. Before running a self-test or retrieving codes, the power fold switch must be inactive for at least 30 seconds.
This is a complex vehicle , electronics , control modules an serial data communication networks. You mite be better off taking it to the dealer or some other repair shop . There could be DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes stored in the SJB - body control module !

Check the starter ground wire.It might touch a hot wire.
Realize that the accessory or ignition wire stayed ground when the key is turned off.That's what will happen.Shorted wire stay constant and the key off stays grounded.Equal (Power+} and (Ground-) or check the ignition key switcht for short.

Yes, the brake switch activates all brake lights. Judging by the age of your vehicle it could well be a ground problem. Try unscrewing your tail light screws and clean up any rust you see before screwing them back in. If you dip the point of each screw in Vaseline it will protect against further rust. Also try following the wiring when it comes out of the harness to see if there's a break or disconnect. Putting a stick between the bottom of the dash and against the brake pedal will let you know if you hit paydirt while you're working as ignition does not have to be on to activate brake lights.

Obviously you have some type of short in the power seat electrical system. Try checking the ground side of each switch with a multimeter. you should not have any current on the ground side of your switch unless the switch is activated. And look for chaffing or short circuits in the wires

1998 Honda Accord: Radio/Cig lighter keeps blowing 20 amp fuse in the passenger side fuse box. Probably have a ground somewhere, but don't know where to start to look for it. Any ideas? Thank you in...


Start with a visual inspection of the cigarette lighter. The chromed walls are the negative pole, and the bottom part is the positive (12v) pole. Evidently these two parts should not come in contact with each other, and if they do bend the metal with a fine screw driver. Make sure the vehicle is off, and preferably, with the fuse taken out, because the screwdriver will make a short. Also check that nothing metallic has dropped into the hole of the lighter, such as a screw. If nothing is found, take out the lighter socket and disconnect it. Check if the fuse continues to blow, and if this is the case, you know that the lighter is not the culprit. I left the radio as a second choice because reaching the back of the radio to unplug the harness is difficult, it requires disassembling the center console (Check elsewhere on fixya for the procedure, i think i published it once). Unplug the radio and see if this stops the fuse from blowing. If it stops shorting, then you know its the radio, but if it doesnt, then the wiring harness is shorting somewhere, in which case, i would recommend a mechanic, unless you are really good at disassembling dashboards, and checking for continuity and voltage on electrical circuits.

Remove and reinsert battery.If no result,proceed as follows:
Use a watch tweezer with sharp endings.Remove watch back cover.You will see somewhere on the watch chassis "AC" engraved.There is a hole with contact at the bottom next to "AC".Gently,put one leg of the tweezer touching this contact and the other leg touching the chassis,instantly.Check the display.If no result,try again.This short-circuit/ground will activated the internal circuit and the watch will start working.If you do not have tweezer,you can use 2 watch repairer screw drivers,as well.

A green screw came lose inside the blender. It


The green screw is a grounding screw and the blender will work fine with out it, but it should be grounded with the power cord ground wire secured to the ground screw. Check the other wiring, the ground screw is not why it doesn't work now.
(unless there is another screw involved. The power comes in and goes to the speed control switch)

ground it off on the case...any grounding method should work. Unless you are talking about the main connection terminals... then just replace the missing thumb screw with a short screw and an eyelette type connecter.
