Defective bendix on your starter simply get a rebilt starter or you just change the bendix the shaft that the bendix slide on to ingage the fly wheel could be rusty that could prevent the bendix to engage the flywheel i posted 2 video as guide there not the same years but should help you out good luck pierre

Centrifugal/centripital force should slide the Bendix gear forward to mesh with the flywheel gears or some other gear on the engine. Since it just spins freely, you might need to lubricate/clean the starter/Bendix assembly. It's also possible some gears on the flywheel are missing; that would cause the Bendix to miss gears when it slides forward. But that situation would remain the same till you were able to rock the vehicle forward or back to bring a gear into alignment.

Awesome! Thank you. I wasn't sure if that bendix would kick out or not. I had one person say that it would drive another gear to start the engine. Thank you again. I will be doing what you said

Kawasaki starter not engaging

Hi, Ricky the starter drive/Bendix/clutch is a mechanical gear driven component that engages the clutch pack ring gear to turn over the engine. It has an internal mechanism that allows the gear to turn in one direction and once the engine starts allows the drive gear to free spin. If gear free spins in both directions then the drive gear has failed, it is not serviceable and needs to be replaced.

I have a Yamaha v star 1100. My starter suddenly just started whining. Sounds like it spinning but not engaging.Checked it. All the geares are turning. What's up with it?

Hi, Jerry your starter motor is not/was not the problem that dubious title goes to the starter drive/Bendix/clutch which is a separate component that is activated by the starter motor it is a mechanical gear driven part that engages the clutch pack to turn over the engine. It has an internal mechanism that allows the gear to turn in one direction and once the engine starts allows the drive gear to free spin. If gear free spins in both directions then the drive gear has failed, it is not serviceable and needs to be replaced. Engine starter spins and will not start motor somethines.

Remove the engine cover to expose the starter motor (or take the starter off). Lubricate the starter bendix, its the gear atop the starter motor shaft, use Marvel Mystery oil and then work the bendix a bit and it should fix it. If the teeth on the bendix or flywheel are damaged obviously that is where the problem lies.

How can you tell if your starter is goin bad

A bad starter will kill a battery real quick. If you can find a DC amp-meter compare it to factory specs, or similar car starters. A bad starter will make a grinding noise, or give false tries where the starter spins free without engaging the motor. Of course, a bad starter will not spin at all, just make sure the relay is working.

When hooking my new vrod battery up i can hear the starter spinning when i try to attach the ground...what am i doing wrong

When you discovered your battery was kaput, you were probably trying to start your bike at the time. I have seen on rare occasions that when this happens, the starter solenoid gets "stuck" in the "engaged" positon. Try rocking your bike backwards and forwards a few times with the transmission in high gear. Rock the bike while shifting the tranny until you get it into high gear. The with the clutch out, rock the bike and turn the engine over a few times. Shift the bike back down to neutral and try to connect the battery. Rocking the bike while in gear rotates the outer clutch drum. If the starter jack shaft is still engaged with the ring gear on the outer clutch drum, rocking the bike a bit will turn the drum allowing the spring in the starter to pull the jack shaft and starter gear back out of engagement. I hope this helps.
