Bike won't start. Turns over has spark doesn't Fire. Like fuel not getting through. No fuel smell at exhaust

2008 wildfire motorcycle turns over but wont start


Dirty spark plug. Water in the gasoline. Bad fuel. Smell the fuel if it smells sour it is. If the bike has been sitting for some time (Three months or more) then dump the fuel. Put it in a Gerry can and drop it off at the gas station or fire department. New fuel and a cap of alcohol ether or acetone. If this does not work check for a fouled or dirty spark plug. If the plug is wet then no spark. Charge the battery with a 2 amp or less charger and check the voltage. It has the be above 12 volts.

My VW Passat is not starting. The engine turns but no fire to start. Can someone help?


You are either not getting gas, or spark. My guess is that your fuel pump is gone. If your Passat is before 2001.5, then I believe it has an Ignition Module. You can get them at AutohausAz.com for about $120. But if it is dead, you should be getting a computer code and your engine light should be on. So check this before buying one. If you can smell the exhaust while someone is turning the engine over with the starter, if you smell gas, then the fuel pump is likely working. If not, then it likely failed.

My bike won't start


First check to make sure the electrical system is in working order. Next, check for spark. If these are in order, check the fuel delivery system.If fuel is o.k, then check the compression. Hope this helps ya.

      Make sure the key and kill switch are both in the "on" position. Ensure that the proper starting procedures for your bike are followed. Is it in neutral? Clutch pulled in? Gas in the tank? Then try to start your bike. Does it turn over? If not, check to see that the battery is properly connected and the terminals are not corroded. If they're loose or dirty, clean and tighten them. Then, using a voltmeter that measures ac/dc and ohms, check to see that your battery has enough charge to crank the engine. If not, replace or charge your battery and try again. If it still doesn't turn over, there may be a loose connection between your battery and starter; a bad ignition or starter switchl or a bad safety relay. Check a repair manual for proper testing procedures for your bike, as each motorcycle differs.

      If your bike turns over but doesn't catch, check to see that it's getting fuel. If the bike has a fuel petcock, make sure it is in the "on" (or, on certain bikes, "prime") position. Then remove the main fuel hose and check to see that fuel is flowing freely. If fuel isn't getting to the carburetor or injection system, your bike won't run. If that's the case, your problem is likely something in the fuel system. If fuel is flowing freely, reattach the lines. If it's not, check to see if the fuel filter is clogged, if a line is pinched or if the petcock is working properly. One way to determine if the problem is in your fuel system is to put a few drops of fresh gas into each spark-plug hole, replace the plugs and turn the bike over. If it starts and then quits, the problem is likely in the fuel system.

  • If you're getting fuel and the bike turns over but still doesn't catch or start, check the spark plug or plugs. Start by pulling off a spark plug wire, then removing a plug using the spark plug socket supplied in your bike's toolkit. Now inspect the plug. It should not be wet (usually caused by fuel, when the plug is not firing) or coated in carbon/burned oil deposits. Now check to see if the bike is getting spark. Although you can get a special, insulated set of pliers to hold the plug, there's a "quick and dirty" method for this: After reattaching the plug wire, lay the threaded part of the plug against the engine (not over the plug hole, as the spark could ignite any fuel that is blown out when you try to start it). Now, making sure you're not in contact with the engine or plug, hit the starter. You should see a nice blue spark. If you don't, make sure the threaded portion of the plug is touching the engine (but the electrode is not) and try again. If you still don't see a spark, you either have a bad plug or a problem with the electrical system. Check to see that all the ignition wires are properly connected and that you can't see any cracks in the wires. If the wires are cracked, they should be replaced. If you're still not getting spark, it's time to consult a repair manual or call a mechanic.

    If you've got fuel and spark, ascertain that your bike is getting enough air. Start by pulling off the air filter. If it's too dirty, you won't get the proper mixture of air and fuel in the carburetor or injection system. If it's clean, check to see that the air box is properly connected-- a loose hose or air leak can feed too much air into the system. If your bike is equipped with a choke, ensure that it's able to move freely and is not stuck in the "on" or "off" position.

    If you've followed these steps and still can't get your bike to run, call in an expert. If you think you've narrowed down the source of the problem, describe the steps you've taken to point the mechanic in the right direction.

    A 'cranks but doesn't start" problem just needs to be narrowed down to compression,fuel,or ignition.The compression is pretty obvious-does it sound like the stater is getting a load when cranking?The next one is fuel-do you smell raw gas fumes coming out of the exhaust?The last one is spark-take the plug out and clamp it to the block,crank it,do you see a spark? If you have compression and spark,try a shot of starter fluid down the carb.(sometimes the float needle can get stuck,and just getting the engine to fire will shake it loose).If you don't have spark,then look for why(not sure if you have a magneto or ignition coil system).

    1993 Honda CBR backfires & won't start


    Hi, Anonymous and the usual suspects are:
    1. Severely discharged or a damaged battery should have 12.5 volts or more and be able to pass a proper "LOAD" test if necessary, you may have a preliminary reading of 12.5 volts or more but little or zero amperage the battery is faulty and must be replaced, AGM batteries fail in this scenario more so than lead acid batteries.
    2. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
    3. Faulty main circuit breaker and or connections.
    4. Faulty ignition coil and or connections.
    5. Faulty spark plug, oil or gas fouled, wrong heat range or service type, wrong gap, loose in the cylinder head, broken electrode or insulator.
    6. Faulty spark plug cables, leaking or broken, internal damage check for spark leakage in the dark.
    7. Faulty ignition module, switch, CKP, MAP, CMP, sensor and or any connector in the ignition circuit could have corroded, loose, or broken pins/sockets
    8. Burnt exhaust valve or air leak in the exhaust system.

    If you smell fuel in the exhaust the vehicle is flooding or there is no spark. If it is a carb engine, make sure that the choke is in and hold you foot flat on the pedal while trying to start, this will clear any flooding.

    1997 900SS SP Not Starting


    My 1997 900ss/sp will not start. I'm new to this bike so I'm wondering if there are some known issues to look for... Here are the symptoms: 1) Engine turns over fine and strong but does not fire up 2) I smell gas 3) I am getting a spark 4) After letting it sit and dry out a bit tried again. It backfired and flames came out of the exhaust pipe - Thanks in advance for any suggestions!Can't tell from the post whether or not it's been sitting a while. If it has even for as little as a couple months, the first thing to do is drain the fuel and get some fresh stuff in there, float bowls too if you can. From my experience, they are sensitive to stale fuel. Wouldn't hurt to throw in new plugs too and of course charge the battery.,,,
