Bike runs but when ridden pops and I notice my speedometer zeros out

Hi Anonymous, popping, coughing, spitting, or backfiring through the carburator or induction module is usually caused by air getting sucked in combustion chamber do bad intake seals leaking. Leaking exhaust gaskets can also be suspect. Remove air cleaner and backing plate, while engine is idling spray WD-40 or Brake Kleen around intake manifold to head area, if RPM's increase you have an intake leak and seals need to be replaced, also spark plugs will be burning whiter than normal. Good luck

Carb removal procedure on a 1993 electra glide 1340 cc stock. thanks VC

To remove your carburetor, remove the air filter cover, the filter element, and the backing plate. There are two large socket head bolts that hold the backing plate to the heads as well as three small screws that hold the backing plate to the carburetor. On the other side of the bike, remove the fuel line from the petcock and take the choke control cable loose by loosening the nut on the backside and removing it from it's bracket. Loosen the adjustment of the throttle and idle cables at the throttle twist grip getting as much slack as you can in the two cables. Pull the carb out of the intake manifold seal. You may have to wiggle it a bit from side to side to get it out. Then, disconnect the throttle and idle cables from the carburetor linkage. Guide the choke cable out as your take the carb off the engine. There may be a vacuum hose connected to the backside of the carb that goes to the VOES switch. When you reinstall the carb, put a new manifold seal on the opening of the intake manifold. If you remove the intake manifold. leave the four bolts loose and temporarily reinstall the carb and the backing plate. Then tighten the bolts. This aligns the carb and the intake so that everything fits together and you don't have a vacuum leak.

Good Luck

How to change out a choke cable on 2001 barley fxd

To change the choke cable, you must take the carb off the engine. Remove the air filter and backing plate. Take the nut off the backside of the choke cable and let the cable come out of the bracket that holds it. Make sure the petcock is turned off and disconnect the fuel hose at the carb. Loosen the throttle and idle cable at the handlebar throttle assembly. Pull the carb out of the intake manifold seal. Work the throttle and idle cables out of their positions in the carb. Bring the carb with the choke cable out and away from the engine. Take the choke cable out of the carb with a 14mm open end wrench. Take the plunger and spring off the old cable and swap it to the new cable and reinstall the choke cable. Put the throttle and idle cables back onto the carb, put a new intake manifold seal on the intake manifold and push the carburetor back into the new seal. Put the choke cable in it's bracket and secure the nut. Be careful and do not over tighten the nut as the plastic cable housing will break. Reconnect the fuel line, the vacuum line, and anything else that was taken off. Replace the air filter backing plate and the air cleaner. Readjust the throttle and idle cables making sure that the throttle operates freely and returns when let go on it's own. Never put any kind of lubricant on the choke cable. There is a knurled wheel that you can use to tighten the cable so that it stays where you put it.

How does the back part of the air cleaner housing come off on 99 dyna super sport.

If the carb and air cleaner are the stock units, you must take the large hollow bolt that goes into each head out. They may be hidden behind some round rubber plugs in the backing plate. You use a large hex key to remove the bolts. With these removed, take the backing plate off by loosening each of the three bolts near the opening of the carburetor a little at a time until the backing plate comes off. The bolts are "undercut" so that they don't fall out of the backing plate and go into the carb in the event they come loose while the engine is operating.

What is the process to remove the carburetor on a 2001 Dyna Super Glide FDX. Thanks in advance.

To remove a carburetor, first turn the fuel petcock off if it has an "off" positon. Then take the air cleaner cover, air filter, and air cleaner backing plate off. Loosen the adjustment on the throttle and idle cables (the two cables). Loosen the nut on the enricher cable and allow it to come out of it's bracket. Disconnect the fuel line and the vacuum line for the VOES and the petcock. Now, rock the carb side to side and pull it out of the carburetor intake seal and guide the enricher cable out. When you replace the carb, always use a new carburetor intake seal to prevent vacuum leaks.

Good Luck

After riding for awhile and I turn off the bike I get drips of oil coming out of the air cleaner .

It depends on the year model of your bike. This thread says your bike is a 01 FXDXT Super Glide. Since 1994, all Harley engines have been what we call "head breathers". The crankcase ventilation is done through ports in the heads unlike previous years where the engine breathed thorough a port in the lower crankcase. In each version, there are baffles to seperate the oil mist from the air. The later version "Head breathers" were better at this than the earlier versions. Still some oil is blown into the air cleaner and makes the removal and cleaning of the inside of the air filter necessary.

However if there is too much oil building up too quickly, in the head breather models there are small "umbrella" valves in the center part of the rocker box covers that over time become brittle due to head. It's not very difficult to take the top off the rocker box cover and replace these umbrellas if you have the proper tools and know how.

On the twin cam engines, there are six bolts holding the top plate on the rocker box cover. Remove these six bolts and the top plate and the center plate come off the head. The umbrella valve is in the center part. Simply remove the old umbrella and pull in the new on in the proper direction. Replace the rocker box covers with new gaskets.
