I bet it's either the killswitch, the safety switch in the kickstand or the starter solenoid. I used to have one of these bikes and the kick stand switch was a pain...totally removed it.

Ps parts on ebay are usually cheaper than parts from the motorcycle shop.

There are only a few things it can be
(1) check for a spark at the spark plugs
(2) check to see if there is any fuel in it
(3) check to see if you have turned the gas valve on to reserve or even on

SOURCE: my gs500 wont start.

I am not familiar with tha GS500. If it has carbs and not fuel injection then try the following.

Get new stock plugs from the dealer. Shut off the gas and drain the carb. Now remove the water trap from the bottom of the petcock. Any water there? Dump the contents of the water trap and briefly turn the gas on . Hold a cup to the petcock to catch the flow. Turn off the gas and look at the bottom of the glass. Any water at the bottom? Any water in the tank should be gone now. Put the petcock bowl and fuel line back on. Turn on the gas and wait for the carb to fill with fuel. Give it a try now. Choke on?

replace your battery although you have 12 volts your battery is producing very little amps not even enough to energize your start relay let alone your starter motor

SOURCE: burgman 250 will not start

Ck fuses and wire connections first. If no problem seen, get bike running and disconnect the ground cable @ battery. If bike dies the problem generally is in the stator or regulator assembly not keeping battery charged. Bike will run untill the battery is too low to keep the ignition system energized and the bike will die. If it continues running w/the ground disconnected, the battery could have a dead cell which will drain the battery in a very short time whether it is running or not.

Hi, Topgunadpro before testing any electrical component in the Starter Circuit it is "IMPERATIVE" that you have a fully charged battery of 12.5 volts or more and be able to pass a proper "LOAD" test because your battery may have 12.5 volts or more but little or zero amps causing the battery to be faulty and must be replaced, especially "AGM" batteries.
1. Ignition Switch not in the "ON" position.
2. Engine Run Switch in the "OFF" position.
3. Check the battery terminals for damage or corrosion check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter.
4. Bank angle sensor needs a reset or is faulty.
5. FOB battery low or dead.
6. Faulty ignition switch.
7. Faulty starter button.
8. Faulty kickstand or clutch pull in switch/sensor.
9. Security alarm needs a reset.
10. Starter relay, solenoid or starter circuit wiring faulty.
11. Starter armature or field coils have failed.
12. Main fuse or circuit breaker may be blown or faulty.
13. The electric starter is working but starter clutch has failed.
14. Check for engine trouble codes.
