That changes as you rise above sea level, but as a rule as the engine cranks at 100 rpm you would have a minimum of 130psi

do a cold and hot compression test... if hot is less that 90 psi, rebuild the engine. if cold is less than 100 psi don't waste your time doing a hot test

Hi, Anonymous your bike runs a piston with a 10:1 compression ratio so your compression test should be around 160 PSI to perform a proper compression test you need a pressure gauge either threaded or push in. You will get a higher more accurate reading when the engine is at normal operating temperature along with burnt fingers if you are not protected or careful, cold testing works just fine and it the method I use 99% of the time. If your bike has cams and valves you need to make sure your valve clearance is within book specs Always blow forced air around the spark plug before you remove it to eliminate any uninvited contamination from getting inside the cylinder. Install the compression gauge, twist the throttle grip to the wide open position and kick or hit the starter button long enough for the engine to turn over 5-6 times. Record the reading and repeat the process 3 times to get the average reading. Single cylinder engines must have a minimum of 100 PSI anything less call a Priest for Last Rites, it's time for a top end overhaul. Multi-cylinder engines must have no more than a 10% difference between each cylinder, for you high- performance ******* no more than 10 lbs. per cylinder. To run on today's fuel most bikes have pistons with compression ratio's designed to give acceptable performance using 87 octane graded fuel, this means the average compression readings on most bikes will be 125-150 PSI. I have gotten readings of 200+ on some big inch V-Twins and Thumpers but these are rare #'s and require high octane fuel to eliminate cylinder ringing or "PING" For more information about your issue and valuable "FREE" downloads that you will need please click on the blue links below. sounds to me that the ecm is not telling the injectors to fire. is the check engine light on? if so, have the codes read.

My 2001 volusioa intruder got hot on the bottom end, left side, and the shifter got really tight and hard to shift?I was told it could be low on oil and am not sure how to check it?

I need to know what the stock compression pressure in psi should be on a 1991 mercury grand marquis 302 5.0L, I dont want the ratio, I need the psi. What was it from factory?


This engine offered a 4-inch bore, 3-inch stroke and a compression ratio of 8.9 to 1.

each cylinder should have the plugs removed, and each cylinder should have atleast 150 psi, with no more than a 10% difference between the 8 cyl .

most engines period will cary atleast 90 to 180 psi depending on the number of cyl.

Hey E..
176psi is fine... I have been a factory trained Yamaha for 43 years...I have seen engines run fine with 90psi..(not racing engines).. Compression is a good indicator of overall top condition of an engine. Compression Ratio is different than compression psi. Now that you have established your baseline.. you want to maintain it!!
....If you want the engine to last.. run at least a 28:1 OIL/FUEL ratio.. even a 24:1 or 20:1 is better *... settle on a ratio and RUN this ratio at ALL times... if you are fouling plugs.. get a PROFESSIONAL that KNOWS how to "jet" an engine.. you should be able to drop the main jet one size..and maybe raise the needle jet clip UP one groove..this will lean out the mixture to the correct FUEL/AIR ratio and you won't foul spark plugs and the engine will LAST a LOT longer.. >> ... *Remember..the two-cycle oil you mix with the gas ALSO lubricates the main crankshaft bearings and the rod bearings.. (replacing those are $$$$$!!)

To test the compression of the engine, use a good screw in type compression gauge. Hold the throttle wide open and rotate the engine through six or seven compression strokes.

The manual says, "If the final readings are 90 psi or more and if the final readings do not indicate more than a 10% variance between cylinders, compression is considered normal".

Do a "wet" compression test as well by squirting 1/2 ounce of oil into each cylinder and redo the test. If the compression comes up considerably, a top end rebuild is probably in order.

At 8.5:1 compression ratio, 120 psi max.

1988 1500 gl with 105 psi compression how bad?


Usually the compression runs 140 to 150 range. If you have 105psi on all cylinders it just means poorer than normal mpg. The bike is big enough at 1500 cc to still have a lot of power for the road. The good thing is the equal psi in all cylinders. Generally a difference of 10 % is the max you can get by with before engine vibration and 'missing' at idle shows up. So if your bike still runs smooth and starts well, don't be bothered too much with the 105 psi. Once it hits 90 or less it really should get a fresh top end.

What should the compression be for a 1983 GS650GT, I have readings of 160 psi on three cylinders and 180 psi the other, I'm going to redo the check again with a different compression tester.


Taking compression test:- the bike's engine should be at normal running temperature and also tht the throttle should be in fully open position.
Your bike's engine has a compression ratio of 9:4:1
here is a guide frm compression ratio to psi :-
8>1 = 102.9 psi
8.5>1= 102.9 - 110.25 psi
9>1= 110.25 - 117.6 psi
9.5>1= 117.6 - 124.95 psi
10>1= 124.95 - 132.65 psi
10.5>1= 132.3 - 139.65 psi
11>1= 139.65 - 147 psi
11.5>1= 147 - 154.35 psi
12>1= 154.35 - 161.7 psi
