the voltage should read between 14 and 14.6 volts at 2500 to 3000 rpm

Its most likely to be the external part of the shift mechanism & therefore it would not need the transmission stripped
It is probably just 1 of the springs on the shift claw that is broken - this explains why it only shifts 1 way

On Yahama XJs, there is a plastic part that might break up into pieces. You can fix this with a detail mirror, flashlight and tweezers.
*Take of the clutch cover then peer and probe through the holes inside.
*Look for the pieces of plastic.
*Once you've got them all out the bike should shift again.
