Some bikes will have this problem no matter what age or condition. I was taught years ago to slow down and stop in second and downshift to neutral whilst slipping the clutch. First gear on bikes is pretty low in ratio and to match speed of engine with road speed is very difficult at times, so suggest using second. Try it.

I bought a Honda 2002 VT1100 Shadow Spirit. I haven't rode a bike since 1973 which was a Honda 750 - 4. I'm having trouble with getting my balance and can't ride it. Has this been a problem with th

I have owned both those bikes. I had that exact year VT. it should ride fine. there must be a problem with yours. check the tire pressure & make sure the brakes aren't hanging, see itf the forks are bent or if the neck bearings are dry or too tight. my main issue with the VT is the performance, it has decent torque but don't try to pass at highway speeds unless you can just throttle by. downshifting doesn't do much for it either.. I know it is a cruiser but it leaves lots to be desired. the stock seat will have you looking for the nearest rest stop! it has nasty vibration felt through the foot pegs and grips. cruisers are supposed to be comfy.
I give it one compliment it is a reliable bike, that old 73 you had will run circles around that VT and is way more comfortable...trade it off asap :)

Sometimes will not downshift into any gear.

Hi, When you shift do you have high RPMs. Try lowering RPMs when you shift.
Also you said it gets warm. Try using a different oil (heavier oil). Hope that helps.

Not staying in gear, hard downshifting.

You may have damage in your transmission causing the problem. But maybe the problem is caused by using the wrong oil. If it happens more when the bike is hot or in stop and go traffic, try using a JASO MA certified full synthetic oil like Amzoil or Mobil1 for motorcycles. Do not use any oil the is Energy Conserving they can shorten the life of your transmission and clutch. If there is no engine damage causing the problem this may solve it for you.

MY 1999 HONDA SHADOW AERO VT1100C3 SHIFTS FINE. WHEN I SLOW DOWN TO STOP, IF I DON'T DOWNSHIFT, I HAVE TO ROCK THE BIKE BACK AND FORTH TO GET IT IN FIRST. DOES THE BIKE HAVE BENT FORKS? AND IF SO CAN THEY...

If it is difficult to get into first gear when stopped then there might be a problem with the clutch. You should have about 10mm of free end play when the clutch lever is out. If it has more than 10mm of free play the clutch is not completely disengauging when you pull in the clutch lever.
If the clutch lever is okay then it is remotely possible that you have bent shift forks. If so, they must be replaced not straightened.

Honda shadow aero 2005 VT750C shifting problem

You have a bent shift fork. This is not a repair job for the amateur. The engine comes out of the frame, turns upside down then the bottom of the gear case gets separated from the top. The entire shift drum, forks and all, gets removed and the bent fork gets replaced. The engine re-assembles in the reverse pattern.

Now what about stressed gears? Any cracked or broken slider gear dogs?

You are going to have at least 75 parts on the work bench. Was the collar on the slider gear on the left side or the right? I am trying to show you why you had best be careful. The shop charges more to fix a box of loose parts than if they fix a gearbox.
