Gears slipping out will be indicated by the gear lever jumping into neutral. This can be from incorrect rear engagement from a loose worn pivot in the gear lever tower or something stopping the gear lever from moving properly.. Clutch problems are indicated by --going to the floor. crashing 1st gear, engines rpm s climbing without an appreciable vehicle speed increase. If there is a fault in the gear box it will be only in the gear engaged (missing teeth-chipped ) and not all gears. If it is a bearing then there will be no noise in 4th gear
Boxes are repairable as mostly it only needs that faulty part to be replaced

Audi A4 2.4 Auto. Driving between 1000 and 2000rmp it feels like the gears are slipping, but also the revs just blip up a notch and down again, but above 2000rmp no problem at all changing gears and

The problem is in the transmission . Run the fault codes to check for faulty TCM or servo's and solenoids. Have a pressure test done on the transmission to check for internal leaks. Remove the pan and check filter condition and while the pan is off have the bands and clutch pack adjustment checked

My 1997 Audi a3 is juddering when I change gears and it's low revs

Hi Kristopher, A shudder from the manual transmission is usually caused from a defective part in the clutch assembly. It could be caused by uneven wear of the pressure plate (clutch cover) or wear on the clutch plate boss (The center of the clutch plate with the springs or rubbers which absorb the torque when releasing the pedal) A shudder can be generated from a defective engine or gear box mount, worn CV joints or spiders or a loose bell housing. Start with the last suggestion and work backwards as the clutch replacement will require the most work. If the clutch assembly has been replaced recently, and the parts available are of the same quality we receive where I am, you will need to do the job over. Regards John

I'm not sure. You should try turning the ignition on and see if it will release a lock on the clutch or something.
Maybe, if the car is in neutral, you should try starting it. the gears may become locked as a safety feature like the steering lock. id definitely try turning the ignition on first though.

WHen under load the motor revs up and it seems that the Clutch is slipping, it has 100000miles and I suspecting the clutch or the high / low range might be messed up, its a 4 plus 3 manuel transmission.

If it feels like the clutch is slipping, chances are it is. If there was a problem in any component that has internal gears, you would have grinding noises. Gears cannot slip. As the clutch wears more you may hear grinding when you try to change gears but that is because the clutch won't fully disengage so the gears are spinning too fast to shift properly. Before that happens, have the clutch replaced.

We have a March 2002 model, so far it has had 3 new clutches. We now have the problem that when the car is in fourth gear, it slips out frequently. No gearbox noises or problems when in other gears. The...

I will assume you bought the vehicle used

The transmission has been somewhat abused &
will have to come out to fix the fourth gear problem

There is no reason to have 3 clutches put in a vehicle that
is 9 years old
Again, abuse, poor driving habit & most certainly poor quality
parts & workmanship on all the clutch service

I will go so far as to say ,none of the clutch work was ever done
correctly any time,no matter how you drive.

AUDI A6 SIX SPEED TIPTRONIC GEARBOX SEEMS TO BE IN WRONG GEAR AND APPEARS TO HAVE SLIPPING

I have been having similar problems. The clutch is slipping as thats how you get the variable gears when in full auto, but this is where the problem comes from, some garages (auto gearbox specialists) are now able to fix it. Do not go to Audi as all they do is replace the gearbox (very expensive). There is no quick fix though! Sorry for the bad news!!
