1984 HARLEY FXRD TOOK BATTERY OUT FOR WINTER PUT BACK IN SPARKED NOW NO POWER WITH KEY IS THERE A FUSE OR RELAY I MAY HAVE BLOWN WHEN IT SPARKED AND WHERE WOULD IT BE

BATTERY GOOD 13.8

  • Ted Free Apr 20, 2016

My wife had an 89 sportster that had a similar issue. No fuse connection directly from the battery, it just went straight to the relays. Take a multimeter and check the ohms on each one to see if you have a bad relay. Works with fuses if you just touch the metal inlays at the top.

Sounds like you have blown something follow advice from Guy D. first. You say the battery sparked when you put it back did you have the ignition switched on? Also if you have an alarm fitted you must remove the fuse that powers the alarm before doing any battery removal or fitting.
A battery should only be removed and fitted to any bike by the following method: -

For a negative earth system.
Removal - undo earth lead connection first, then positive lead connection.

Fitting - connect positive lead connection first, then negative lead connection. Hope this helps.

Sounds as if you have blown a fusible link. Don't know Fords that well, but usually these are inside the several hot wires going to the battery +, or the starter main +.

Siren works, but no power to instrument after recharging battery. Nothing changed on the bike, was just sitting all winter.

There should be a small fuse box near the battery with probably three fuses inside. Have you checked those?

Put in new battery still no power. was riding and everything went dead. the bike is a 98 cbr 1100

Hi and welcome to the site,

Initially, have you checked the 30A main fuse? It would be inside the starter relay. To locate the starter relay, follow the cable from the battery's + terminal.

Good luck and thank you for asking.
