Question about 2000 Suzuki VS 800 Intruder

Temp below 60 will not start, starter turns over, but the engine doesnt fire

Tried different choke settings,also gave a little throttle while turning over.

Sounds like a lean air fuel mixture. colder temp require more fuel i.e choke...if nothing has changed and the bike used to start I would then look to the carbs being plugged

On the starting issue alone. It sounds very much like a loose ground connection at the battery or starter perhaps. Sounds crazy but, check you negative connection at the batttery and at the starter. This could explain why it is not a constant issue...yet. Hope this helps, and please post your solution when completed. Thanks,

SOURCE: bike starts on choke and runs.Turn off choke

Very common problem, You will have to remove the carb.s and clean them. Gas dries and turns to varnish after 3-4 months, this dried gas clogs up the jets and ports in the carb.s. If you chose to do this your self there are adjustment screws on the bottom do not mess with these screws. Just clean the bowls and jets, clean one at the time so you do not mix up parts.

if you can turn it over that easy then yes. to confirm it tip a thimble of oil down the spark plug hole and the compression should come back temporarily.

it must be tight on the starter.
check battery voltage when fully charged. it should read over 12.5v for a good battery. anything less then get a new one.

Water in the carb float bowl? Remove the carb then remove the float bowl. Use spray carb cleaner to clean the carb. Pay special attention to the main jet.

Fill with correct fuel/oil mix. turn switch to I. Pump primer bulb 4-5 times. Turn choke on. Pull starter until engine fires. Turn choke off. Pull Starter until engine runs & allow to warm up for 10 secs before trying to engage throttle. If it doesn't start after 3-4 pulls with no choke then try same sequence again. May have to use 1/2 choke after engine fires. If it still won't start then something is wrong with it & it will need to be checked by a service agent.

Starting problem wont start on choke


You need to explain a little better... do you mean it will only crank properly when the choke is open and the throttle is closed ??? Has the battery been properly charged and tested ??? ( be honest here because we can't help if you don't ) are the battery cable connections is good shape ??? Have you tried spraying some carb cleaner into carbs when cranking ??? I have the same engine on my Triumph

Adjusting the choke


nice engine get rid of the choke all together you dont need it its just to choke the engine for cold starting i would get a 725 cfm without choke for it or turn it over to injection tbi or port. do you have an electric fuel pump you will want one when doing without the choke

IT JUST WON'T START


Start with fresh gas and a new spark plug.

Then follow theses steps.
1 Turn ignition on
2 If equiped with a primer, prime it a couple of times
3 Turn to full choke
4 Set the throttle lock to full throttle
5 With short quick pulls try to start
6 when you hear the engine fire shut the choke off
7 A couple of more pulls it should fire
8 If it stalls start over from step 3

I have been trying to turn on my chain saw. Ive pulled the handle back by the trigger gave a few pull on the rope. then i pushed the button in on the side also the push the button back in by the trigger...


The chainbrake should be activated when starting the chain saw. Activate the chain brakeby pushing the front hand guard forwards.b>Cold engine Start position, 1: Set the start/stop switch in the choke position by pulling thered control outward - upward.Decompression valve: Press the valve to reduce the pressure in the cylinder and makestarting easier. Once the machine has started the valve will automaticallyreturn to its original setting.Air purge: Press the air purge diaphragm repeatedly until fuel fills thediaphragm (at least 6 times). The diaphragm need not be completely filled.Grip the front handle with yourleft hand. My BMW R1100RT is difficult to start. Must use full choke, give full throttle once and then hit the start button. It then starts just when I let go of the start button. Often it refuses to start and then...


The choke actually just opens the throttle bodies a little (the bike is fuel injected). Try using putting on the 'choke', then pressing the start button, but dont touch the throttle. Does it start ok? Also, when started, if you use the 'choke' does it increase the engine speed? If it does not, then you need to set it up correctly.

How to use your choke correctly. The choke is only to be used for starting a cold engine. If it is a lever, usually you pull it up for on , and push it down for off. look for some type off arrow, or up & down. To start your cold engine, turn on fuel tap, give full choke, turn key on and press starter or kick start, it is very important that you do not use the throttle while starting with the choke, just turn the key on, and press the starter with full ckoke, and no throttle. Once the bike fires and starts, turn down the choke a little and find a idle, after a few minits, you can turn off the choke and ride off. The use off the choke is only for starting a cold engine.

Van was running fine stoped for five minutes will not start now what could it be only has 109k


does the engine turn over. If it does turn over, is it slow. If it does turn over, it could be the coil not firing, or no gas getting to the throttle body. Spray a little starter fluid in the throttle body and try to start the engine, see if it fires off at all with starter fluid. These are simply done, just hope it's nothing major. Give a little more detail about what it is doing.

I just bought a 2003 suzuki intruder 1500. The bike idles well when it is cold but, after 5 miles of riding the idle is high when stopped at a redlight. If i put it in gear and release the clutch slightly...


(Manual Choke) Make sure that when the choke plunger is fully pushed IN (e.g. choke off) - that the choke cable is actually slack, if it is still tight then adjust the cable till there is a little bit of slack with the plunger pushed in.
(Auto Choke)Have you tried blipping the throttle, just give it a guick stab when it's warmed up and running, be quite sharp and deliberate with the throttle, this usually cancels auto-choke if it's working properly.
if not...
try setting the idle screw on the throttle body when the engine is hot, unscrew the screw to get the desired idle speed, then let it cool (fully cool) and see if it still starts and warms up ok with the new lower setting, either problem solved or back to square 1.. (reset the idle screw back to original setting, good idea to make a note of how far you unscrewed the screw in the first place :-)
check the accelerator cable(s) are not too tight, could be holding the throttle open slightly.
check the air filter/box to see if it is clogged... clogged filter=rich mixture...
Have the engine temp/air temp/oxygen sensors (if applicable) checked out at a garage, they could be causing problems also, but are £20-60 each, if one is faulty dont get bummed for labor charges, a temp sender is a bolt with a connector on it, fit with a ring spanner in 15 seconds, just get the garage to show you which one is broken first (just so you know ;-) then when they "offer to fit it for you" just ask for the part and fit it yourself - turns a £100 job into £20-60 job.

Just check through everything in roughly this order, starting with "free" "easy" and moving onto "£20 - £60" - "annoying and niggly" - hopefully you get if fixed near the top of the list!
thinking... this is a great thumping engine - Are you using the correct grade fuel, try premium (97RON or better) if you've been on regular (95RON), some engines just don't like weak fuel especially big bike and performance car engines.
