On the pulley, they are marks that line up with a mark on the head. That is TDC for the cam. Then set the crank to 0 on the timing marks. Put the belt back on.

Does the same procedure apply even when the belt is already off when unsure if the marks were set correcly prior to belt removal...

  • Steve Drew Nov 28, 2014

The problem is the marks will not line up when turning pulley and cam.

  • Brad Brown Nov 28, 2014

The cam pulley should be keyed to the cam shaft. Take the belt off, set the cam pulley to the mark on the head so it aligns with the one on the cam, set the crank pully to TDC and put the belt back on

Are there a number of revolutions to turn before lining up the marks on the crank to get to top dead center?

  • Brad Brown Nov 29, 2014

    No, just line it up

Tracer wont start

What else? You didn't say what year tracer, but yes, you are right: both the crank and cam sprockets must be at 12 position.

Here is a link:http://www.2carpros.com/diagrams/mercury/tracer

If timing is correct, check for spark on all 4 plug wires, or at least a couple of them. If timing and spark are good, you may need to test fuel pressure. Multiport injection pressures are high, up around 40 psi or more.

What is the timing for a 1994 mercury tracer trio. i belive i have to replace the timing belt and the water pump. im not sure tho bc the feul cut off came on first than after i filled it up it went off. im...

First check to make sure the fuel shutoff is still on. When the engine jumps timing it is usually caused by either the water pump bearings went bad and seized or fell apart. The other is when the belt is old or excessively worn and breaks. Timing marks are dependent on engine size. 1.9 engines have single cam and all marks point straight up. 1.8 is more detailed depending on if it has 1 or 2 cams.

How do you align the camshaft & crankshaft timing marks 1.9

This is the same as a Ford Escort 1.9, the #1 cylinder should be all the way up. To confirm- the crak shift mark should be on zero which is Crank Shift Center- THe camshift sproket should align with the headmark. Make sure both marks don't move. Align the belt- not too tight , not to loose

1993 mercury tracer

To replace the headlight on a 1993 Tracer you must turn the black plastic retainer ring counter clockwise and then pull back gently. The ring and bulb should then slide out toward the engine.
Carefully grab the sides of the plug and pull the bulb out.
When replacing the bulb make sure not to touch the glass part or it will cause the bulb to burn out sooner. Place the black ring back over the bulb with the open end towards the glass part of the bulb. Fit the wiring onto the back of the bulb and insert the bulb back into the reflector. The black plastic ring has notches that fit over protrusions. Turn the black ring clockwise and your done. Test the headlight. Happy Driving
