Yes, you should adjust the valves periodically on any 4-stroke engine. Your owner's manyal should list a suggested interval. The interval will be very long for engines with hydraulic lifters, but to my knowledge your bike is not one of these. Is that what you were asking?

You do not ask an answerable question so if you could post this again in an answerable format I am sure someone will be able to advise you. OR you could buy a service manual and probably find all information you need in it.

Backfire on my 1985 honda xr600r

Hi, Anonymous and the usual suspects are:
1. Severely discharged or a damaged battery should have 12.5 volts or more and be able to pass a proper "LOAD" test if necessary, you may have a preliminary reading of 12.5 volts or more but little or zero amperage the battery is faulty and must be replaced, AGM batteries fail in this scenario more so than lead acid batteries.
2. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
3. Faulty main circuit breaker and or connections.
4. Faulty ignition coil and or connections.
5. Faulty spark plug, oil or gas fouled, wrong heat range or service type, wrong gap, loose in the cylinder head, broken electrode or insulator.
6. Faulty spark plug cables, leaking or broken, internal damage check for spark leakage in the dark.
7. Faulty ignition module, switch, CKP, MAP, CMP, sensor and or any connector in the ignition circuit could have corroded, loose, or broken pins/sockets
8. Burnt exhaust valve or air leak in the exhaust system.

Just got my self a 2005 kx250f was runing fine one day and now i cant start it changed air filter spark plug and cleand the carb it back fies alot

The valves probably need adjusting. This should be done periodically with four stroke dirt bikes. When my bike's valves need adjusting, it kills me trying to kick it, and it backfires a lot.

Another symptom I have noticed for valves that need adjustment is when I pull in the clutch sometimes, the bike will stall.

Hope this helps.

Hi i just got a 1990 xr600 ! it starts 1st kick when cold but even after just 10 mins of riding she is red hot and is immpossible to start ! why or what causes this ?

Too lean!

Carburation is more than likely set too lean, or like one of my buys, had a cracked inlet manifold..letting in air.

The site below shows the carby in all it's glory with every part and name. The list of jets size# are for the range of riding conditions for that bike. Get jets at least one increment UP in size. They're available from all bike make dealers.

Exhaust, cam or valve timing/modifications will efect jetting to some degree, as will the need of a top end service.

Cheers.

The bike wont start! seems to have good compression, and fire. the timimg mark is lining up at tdc but with a shot of starting fluid i have gotten a flame thru the carb! oh, and the valves have been...

If your XR600 has ever sat for more than just a few months, there's a very good chance that the carburetor is plugged with fuel varnish. This means that the carb will have to be disassembled and cleaned.
A big four cycle engine like your's may "feel" like it has good compression, but it may not have what it takes to start and run. Check the compression. With the throttle wide open and a few good kicks of the starter, you've got to see at least 140 psi of compression. Anything below that and it isn't going to start or run reliably. If the compression is low, the first thing to do is re-check the valve tappet clearances. Insufficient tappet clearance will cause low compression. Also make sure the kickstart-actuated compression release is not hanging up and causing compression loss after the kick start lever is returned to its parked position. If the valves are properly adjusted and the compression is still low, then internal engine repairs are needed.

I just bought 96 xr600 from original owner, in imaculate hardly used condition, verified 2188miles. It has substatial power, but low compression 85psi, adjusted the valves they were slightly tight -.005,...

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. If the bike has adequate power just go ahead and ride it. Chances are it will get better from use. The rings are probably sticking in the ring grooves creating the low compression. A shot of WD-40 in each spark plug hole, left sitting overnight may help the free up the rings. The brand of oil does not matter much. Just be certain to NOT use synthetics or oils with "Special" additives. They can swell or shrink the cork on the clutch friction plates. Now you need new plates.

Bike backfires when trying to crank

On most 4 stroke dirt bikes it is not the timing but the valves are out of adjustment. Usually they tightened up as they wear. If you have a manual on the bike it will show you how to check the valves.
