I had a honda 400 you need to check that the lead is correctly attached the top end does not just pull out you have to screw it in and the same at the plug end.i would first check your main 30 amp fuse and then check your plugs for any carbon deposits check you have the right firing order for it to run and if possible have someone check your coils for consistency hope this helps ..if you google cb 400 they're are plenty of PDF manuals you can download for free

SOURCE: honda cbr 400 rr starting problem

i could not find a schematic of a 96 cbr400rr, so guessing this bike is not from the USA. however, there should be a master fuse near the battery on the positive side mounted to the battery box somewhere. i would check this fuse first to see if its burned out.

also, is battery fully charged? might have to top charge the battery to get good juice if its old (>3 years) and been sitting for a bit.

good luck.

Definatly a good tune up would help, but it also sounds as if you may have a bad stator. I would check the voltage at the battery and see if it goes up and down when accelorating.

SOURCE: 1974 honda cb550 will not run?

• The first thing to do with ANY engine that has sat for any longer than a couple of months is to dump ALL the fuel in the tank and carb(s). ALL OF IT !! You'll want to refill with some high priced fuel that has fuel system cleaners (Like Chevron with Techron) not becasue you need high-test fuel, but because you need the cleaners. It's ether that or disassemble the carbs and clean out jets you can't find much less see. Your choice. The carb kits alone will cost you about $50 so a tank of high-test is looking pretty good, huh?

• Now the fact that you tried to crank the engine with old fuel has fouled the sparkplugs. All of them. Go buy all new sparkplugs.

SOURCE: Honda CB360 won't start HELPP MEE!!!!

I worked on a bunch of these bikes back when they were new and I was working at Mathews Honda in D.M. Iowa. Bear in mind that was 30 years ago. IF I recall correctly. . . . .

First, the points only open and close. Other than that they don't move. The points are adjusted for gap by being moved L and R then locking down in place with a screw.
Assuming you have a good set of points, set the point gaps to 15 thousandths. The timing is set by rotating the base plate the points are mounted on. Behind the plate is a centrifical advance. Get an inductive pickup timing light and hook it up to the battery. Hook the pick up on the left sparkplug wire.
Start the motor and point the light at the top of the gearbox flywheel. Yes, with the cover removed some oil will spit out. This is normal. Rev the bike and you will see the timing marks. You will also see a static timing mark on the casing. Rotate the points base plate to line up the marks. When you let off the gas the flywheel marks should move counter clockwise. If they don't, then remove the points cover and free up the centrifical advance mechanism. You just timed the engine.

The photo will not open in "FixYa". Email it to me at tombones49@gmail.com. Would you like to know how to synchronize and balance the carbs?

Hi.. my cb400 hyper vtec 2002,my problem is no spark while I start,I have check the pulser is good n I have try using other cdi also not getting spark,or I should check oil level sensor? Pls advice,

Hi, Dian and the usual suspects are:
1. Fouled spark plugs.
2. Discharged battery, needs to be 12.5 volts or better and be able to pass a "LOAD" test, your battery may show 12.5 volts but has little or zero amps and must be replaced.
3. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
4. Loose connection at ignition coil or plug between ignition sensor and module.
5. Spark plug cables in bad condition, shorting, leaking, spark plug cable connections loose check for spark leakage in the dark.
6. Faulty ignition coil or CDI or electronic control module.
7. Faulty CKP, CMP, or BAS sensor.
8. Faulty ignition switch.
9. Tilt sensor needs a reset.
10. Security alarm failing to disarm needs reset

Trouble shoot

Hi, Brian you need "FIVE" things in order for a cylinder to run properly:
1. FUEL: in order to validate your not getting fuel spray some starting fluid into the air cleaner and hit the starter button, if it fires up and runs for a few seconds then you know you have a fuel delivery issue.
2. SPARK: remove the spark plug and with it connected to the spark plug cable ground the threads to something metal you should see a bluish white spark if not you have a faulty spark plug, spark plug cable, ignition coil, condenser, CKP, ECM, sensor or the wiring in between.
3. COMPRESSION: you must have at least 80-100 PSI for most bikes if not perform a leak down test you may have a burnt or bent valve or hole in the piston or broken rings.
4. CAM TIMING: confirm your timing marks are aligned to see if the cam chain or adjuster are worn out and the chain has skipped a couple teeth.
5. IGNITION TIMING: on older bikes check to see if your points have not closed up, timing plate has not become loose and confirm with a timing light for proper retard and advance functions, on newer bikes where timing is controlled by an ECM and is nonadjustable check you CKP, TPS, MAP, O2, sensor or it's counterpart for integrity.

92 honda cb 750, oil light will not go out, bike won't start

Look around the engine oil drain plug and fill area and see if there is an electric sending unit( small plug with a prong for a wire) that is screwed into the engine if so check to see if its unplugged / could be a low oil cut off switch that kills all power to the ignition if the oil is to low ( or the wire is unplugged)

Hi, i have a 1990 honda cb1 (cb400). the problem i have is getting it started, it doesnt like starting with the choke and it seems to catch when i take my thumb off the starter button. even when the engine...

Hi!

Nahh, i dont think the problem is any wire, the problem is more lite the sparking plug or the carburettors. Is is after all a 1990 model, i dont know when you replaced the sparking plugs last time, but im sure you never cleaned the carburettors.

Try first to replace the sparking plugs, thats the easy job, if that dosent make is start easyer then you have to take the carburattors down and clean them, and thats the hard job.

Good luck
