LOOSE WIRE.

SOURCE: when riding 2005 fuel injected harley road king,

Sounds like the intake manifold is leaking. The area where the leak usually happens, are those two rubber sleeves that go from the heads, (Cylinder heads) to the intake. Sometimes the clamp/s loosen up. Sometimes these rubber sleeves deteriorate, and cracks form.

This makes the engine backfire, pop, and idle fast.

The added air at the wrong time cause a backfire, when you let off the throttle. The added air causes the engine to pop, because the exhaust valve has sucked up some cold air.
The engine idles fast, because more air is being introduced, and not metered by the injection system.

(The exhaust valve thing. Exhaust valves are supposed to open, and let exhaust out right? Well there is a thing called Valve Overlap.
The Exhaust valve hasn't closed all the way yet, and the Intake valve is opening.
The 4 stroke engine, (Of which a Harley is), has these four strokes.
1.Intake Stroke. Fuel/air is sucked in.
2.Compression Stroke. The piston comes up and squeezes the fuel/air mixture.
3.Combustion Stroke. The spark plug lights the fuel/air mixture off.
4.Exhaust Stroke. The spent gases are expelled out.

Your Road King has one camshaft. There are four cam lobes on it.
Intake, Exhaust, Intake, Exhaust.

If you had the camshaft in your hand, and had the gear end facing you, look down the camshaft. You will see those egg shaped cam lobes. You will notice that No.1 cylinder Intake lobe is facing to the left.
No.1 Exhaust is facing to the right.

If you put a degree wheel on the gear end of the camshaft, and had the No.1 Exhaust lobe ramp nose facing straight up, you would see that it's about 110 degrees, before the Intake lobe ramp at .050 lift, comes into play. (The roller, of your roller lifter has raised the Exhaust valve up .050 inch) There is about 55 degrees before the Exhaust valve hasn't quite shut.
This is okay for normal running. Introduce a vacuum leak, and the surge of extra cold air, makes it pop.

Solution? I suggest checking to see if the clamps on those rubber sleeves are loose. You can also spray WD-40 towards the ends of each rubber sleeve, when the engine is idling, and see if it speeds up. Means, one or more, of those rubber sleeves has deteriorated.

SOURCE: Fuel gauge not working

Replace the sender unit in the tank

SOURCE: removing gas tank on harley flhtci

remove seat, remove console on top of tank, disconnect wiring from console to tank, disconnect vent line if present, disconnect fuel line on tank, disconnect fuel gauge (up under tank on left side, 3 wires, 4 wire connector, wires are yellow, orange, and black), remove bolt at rear of tank, remove two side bolts up front under tank (coil bracket is there also, carefully cut clamp on cross over hose located up front under tank.
This works better with three hands remove one side of cross over hose, fuel will flow freely so the extra hands are good at "plugging" the hose and the tank. Gently remove tank tilting front of tank as much as you can till you get it clear of the frame, while still tilted at a steep angle put the cross over hose back on.
To make things easier drain all fuel out of tank before reversing the process to reinstall tank. Hope this helps.

form the sound of it you need a new clutch pak in the starter. Its pretty simply fix. don't let them sell u a new starter just a clutch pak for the starter. I take it by spinning u are not talking about the motor turning over. If its turning over then its not the starter.

After about 10 minutes of riding, my bike dies. starts right when cranked but dies intermittently from there on.

You have a Harley so take advantage of self diagnostics and first off check your bike for DTCs. This can save you many troubles, much time, many headaches and LOTS of money. Then if you do not know how or want to find out how or do it, next thing would be to check out your Engine Tempersture sender.

You have a HARLEY so why not take advantage of the superb self diagnostic system and see what DTCs are set. This will save you untold time, headaches and money. Then if you do not know how to display DTCs or you do not want to find out how to display the DTCs or if you just do on not want a quick and easy diagnosis and fix you could start by testing your engine temperature sender which is likely the problem.

I have a 2007 FXDWG and after riding for awhile, when come to a stop it dies. it will start right back up every time. Today it even hic up'd a few times while riding. Any ideas?

If your bike is equipped with a carburetor, it sounds like it's idled a bit slow. It should be idling at or near 1000 RPM. If it's stock, the carb is jetted pretty lean to pass emissions tests as well. If you can richen it up by changing the slow speed jet up one size step. This will make the engine run smoother and eliminate the spitting out of the carb. If it's fuel injected, you'll need to take it to a shop that can change the fuel mapping. I know nothing about that as I work on the older non-fuel injected bikes.

Good Luck

The bike dies when coming to a stop. then it starts right back up. i think the idle need to be turned up?

If it's got a carburetor on the engine, you'll see a flat top on the carb. Look just to the right of this top and you'll see a screw. This is the throttle stop screw. Turning it clockwise increase the engine's idle speed, counterclockwise decreases it. You may have to take the air filter cover off to see the screw.

If your bike fuel injected, you must take your bike to a shop as the idle speed is controlled by the computer.

Good Luck

Engine dies coming to a stop, restarting has a little knocking but then fires up. let sit awhile start up and runs fine sometimes for days or weeks and then happens again. 07 softail custom

You didn't say whether the bike was carburated or fuel injected but I would assume it is fuel injected. You'll have to take it to a dealer unless the computer has been changed. They can scan for codes and reset the idle speed.
