Look down low on the right side of the engine, their is a "sight glass" that you will be able to see the oil level, tilt the bike a bit and you can see the oil, leave the bike on the regular kick stand and if you can see the oil in the glass the level is fine, above that is the oil fill cap, that is where you put the oil, i think your bike holds 2500 cm of oil, that is about 2 and 2/3 quarts of oil. remember that motorcycle oil is different than regular car oil, this is a common mistake which also leads to the clutch plates sticking together after a bike sits a while.

I have my nephews 83 Maxim in my garage, when I start the bike oil flows from what I believe is the drive shaft vent tube into the air box. What would cause the pressure in the driveshaft to increase to...

I think what you are looking at is the crankcase vent line.....the blowby gases from the engine flow into the airbox to be burnt with the incoming air.
Have a close look at the oil level in the crankcase....Yamaha usually has an oil window ....down low on the side of the crankcase....with the bike warmed up and shut down a few minutes on the centerstand...the oil level should be about half way in the glass.....overfilling the crankcase will cause the oil carryover situation you describe.

1982 yamaha maxim 650. Amount of oil to put in when do I do a oil change

Most bikes will take up to 3 qts, use only full synthetic motorcycle oil, in the 5 or 10w 30 weight, should be good. Put in 2 full qts then slowly add the third, but watch the level when you are pouring. Some will take just under 3 qts. Depends on the bike, clutch, etc. Hope this helps.

Oil capacity?

Should be 3.5 Liters / quarts with the filter change. Put in 3 liters then top up as needed to get the level to the top of the viewing window.

To check your oil, bike should be level, on it's center stand, engine should NOT be running!

Any oil viscosity between 10w30 and 20w50 will work just fine. Smaller numbers if the weather's cooler and/or you only do short rides. Bigger numbers for hot weather and longer rides.

Where and how do i check the oil on my 1985 Yamaha XJ700 Maxim X?

Put your bike on the high stand and thn check the oil level at the right handside cover just above the brake pedal. It should be fully covered with oil.
The standard capacity of oil for is around 2.5litres without the oil cooler and if with oil cooler (the one tht frm XJ650) the oil capacity is thn 3.8 litres.

How much and what type of oil

I have a 1985 Maxim XJ700NC There is a window on the side case for proper oil levels when the bike is on the center stand. The only recommended oil should be Yamalube 20-40. Do not use automotive oils. There is a slight difference in the makeup of the oil as the bike is oil cooled, and you have a "Wet Clutch". The energy conservation oils have emulsions in them that will ruin your clutch plates.
