Anyone would do the same thing you would do to get an answer. Google "Hiawatha bike serial number," or find vintage bike sites and post pics of the bike and ask for help. In any case a Huffy made bike is not all that valuable and exact year is relatively unimportant.

Ride the bike to the nearest bicycle shop (if the brakes don't work, be careful) and explain your needs to the technician there.

A serial number at best will only tell you when the bike was made, and only for a limited number of brands. Some brands have a date code on the head badge (where the fork goes through) that gives that info. Please see my tip for more:

TREK bicycles have the serial number on the underside of the down tube near the crankset. Flip your bike so that the wheels are up and look at the tube near the pedals (on the tube that runs towards the handlebars).

Many TREK manuals are available here: http://www.bike-manual.com/brands/trek/om/welcome/index.htm. You can find a good picture of the parts of the bicycle and their names in the manual.

Some other brands of bicycles have their serial numbers on the seat tube near the crankset.

The Serial number is most commonly located on the bottom of the bike inbetween the crank arms.

Sometimes it has been painted over and tough to read. Yoiu may also need to remove a plastic protector from the area, but not always.

If the serial number is not there it may be near the where the rear wheel enters the frame on either side. or near the steering column of the bike.

I was able to find the answer on a California University website. The model number was on the bottom of the bike near the pedals.
