The mower you have has a small electrical connection on the bottom of the carb bowel..it is designed to have positive gas flow shut off when the mower is not running...the problem is when they fail and that is often..the gas flows back through the carb and into the crankcase and cylinders..I.E gas in the oil..you can get it replaced but with this new gas it WILL fail again..the best fix is to put a hand shut off valve between the tank and the carb..just remember to shut it off EVERY TIME the engine is not running..Now for the immediate fix..drain the engine be careful as gas will be mixed with the oil, replace the filter and remove the spark plug making sure you tape the end of the wire to eliminate any possible spark..now using an old rag or something to catch the fuel and rid the gas in the cylinder.. Turn the engine over a couple of spurts until the gas is gone...replace the plug put new filter and oil..you will be good to go...it most likely will smoke some until the oil/gas left in the exhaust will burn off...Just remember TURN THE GAS VALE OFF EVERY TIME IT JS NOT RUNNING..NO EXCEPTIONS...I know it happened to my mower twice...hope this helped. Good luck..

SOURCE: have a 1986 lawn chief tractor, its been sitting

Sometimes when a battery is low or connections at the battery are dirty, you will hear a click,
that is the solenoid activating, but the battery voltage is low enough that the starter will not turn.
Sometimes this condition has a chatter.

Easiest test for this situation is jump start from you automobile, or charge the battery for an hour,
and see what happens from there.

SOURCE: Changing the oil filter on a lawn tractor

If it is a screw on type oil filter, apply a film of oil on seal, then screw on. If you want to, go ahead and pour some oil in the filter, in my opinion the oil will circulate faster if there is some oil already in the filter.

Why won't my raining lawn mower not start?

Check oil level, take off the spark plug clean it and regap and or buy new one and regap. Take carburator off and clean it. Test coil and ignition switch. Clean gas tank and fuel lines. There could be a lot of other things to check. It could be a safety switch, dirty cables, bad battery or bad wiring. It could just be a loose wire that's not grounded.

I can not start my Craftsman's chain saw. It was running fine and just quit. I have changed the spark plug, got new gasoline/oil mixture, cleaned the air filter, and cleaned the carburator, checked for...

If all is as you say you now need to check that it is mechanically sound, remove the muffler and check the condition of the piston through the exhaust port, any signs of scuffing or damage to the piston and the machine will have to come apart to assess the damage.
Good luck.

While performing an oil and filter change on my lawn tractor, what can I use to clean the sludge that may be in the oil system?

You could use new oil diluted with kerosene, or even gasoline, to help remove sludge....just run it for a short time and then drain it. But since you have a filter to remove bits of metal from the oil I think there is no need to do anything except change the oil at recommended intervals. It would be helpful to buy a magnetic drain plug to trap small pieces of metal.

I have fuel in crank case in 1996 road king .took off cam cap and oil and gas came out. gasket was leaking. also gas and oil coming out of carbruator.

Usually when you find gasoline in your crankcase it's because your carburator is leaking fuel into the cylinder heads. From there it goes into the cylinders on top of the pistons. Down past the rings into the crankcase. If enough gasoline goes in there, it will go past the sprocket shaft seal and into the primary case as well.

This is normally caused by a bit of trash getting under the float valve in the carburator. But, on a 1996 model, there is supposed to be a vacuum operated petcock. The petcock is supposed to close whenever there is no vacuum on it that is supplied from the intake manifold. Either the petcock has been changed, which is not unusual since the petcocks were quite troublesome, or it is not working properly.

First, you need to clean out the carb. and get any trash out from under the float valve. Remove the carb from the engine. Take the float bowl off the bottom of the carb. Pull the pin out that holds the floats and remove them and the float needle valve. Blow compressed air through the fuel inlet fitting to clean any trash out of the fuel valve seat. Inspect the needle valve for damage, replace if necessary. Reassemble and reinstall the carburator. Check for proper operation prior to starting the engine.

With the carb cleaned, you can install either an aftermarket manual petcock (Pingel) or a Harley petcock for a 1994 or prior model. These are manual petcocks. When you're not riding your bike, turn the petcock to the "OFF" position. Also, install a fuel filter in your fuel line between the tank and the carb. Get one of the good ones with the scintered metal filters in it.

Change your oil and filter. Check your primary oil as well. Change it if contaminated with gasoline. Before you reinstall your air filter, connect the fuel line to the carb and turn the gas on. Closely watch the inside of the carb throat to see if fuel starts to "bubble up" into the throat of the carb. This usually takes a few minutes so be patient. If it does, you need to replace the float valve needle with a new one and check the float setting. If it doesn't "bubble up" you're good to go. Then, don't forget to turn your petcock to the "OFF" position when you quit riding the bike.

Murray riding mower 12.5 hp briggs & stratton spitting oil & gas out of carb & muffler when trying to start

Drain oil... it is full of gasoline due to a bad float pin and rubber gromet in your carb. When your float pin and gromet fail, gas just keeps flowing into your carburetor, eventually flooding your motor with gas and oil mix.
