Question about 2000 Yamaha V Star 1100 Classic

2004 V-star 1100-Over-revving all by itself

Once hot, the engine revs up extremely high making traffic lights and stop signs interesting moments. Slightly engaging the clutch will pull the engine back to a more normal idle. I have no tach, but I would estimate the engine is revving to 3500-4000 rpm without any throttle at all. I'm gonna burn up an engine or a clutch or both if I don't get this solved. HELP!

Could be a lot of things. sounds minly like you need a valve adjustment. could also be a carb issue or an air leak around the carbs ( carb boots not on all the way or cracked).

ADDED NEW EXHAUST LATELY? SOUNDS LIKE CARBS NEED CALIBRATING. IF BIKE SAT DOWN FOR THE WINTER OLD GAS CAN SOMETIME GEL IN INJECTION SYSTEM. RECALIBRATE CARBS AND CLEAN INJECTION SYSTEM SHOULD DO THE TRICK.

2002 yamaha v star 1100 when i hold it at high rpms it backfires a bit is this normal or ok or whats my problem?

if you are sitting still and not riding the bike (just revving it out till it wont rev any more)then it is notbackfiring as such you have reached the engines rev limiter and it is cutting power to the coils in sequence to protect itself from destruction,if it is backfiring at high rpm while riding then is quite likely the engine is running a touch on the lean side, and this needs to be rectified as an engine run for to long in a lean state will cause premature failure of major engine components(pistons normally melt and weld themselves to the barrells)not ideal at all, hope this helps
