2006 STREETGLIDE, at times the bike coughs when I take off & backfires once in a while, I took it to a mechanic (they found nothing wrong)it acts like it is starving for fuel, again, only once in

The bike will cough & backfire (only once in awhile), it gets great gas mileage. I use CHEVRON 91 octane.

If it's fuel injected, your dealer should be able to remedy that problem, it sounds like it's running a bit lean. He'll have to change the fuel delivery a tad.

Good luck

SOURCE: Sportster Cough and Backfiring

Hi You might replace the sparkplugs with new ones. Also drain the fuel and put new good gas in. I believe you had a bad batch of gas in.

SOURCE: sportster timing

Time to check the firing timing and tuning of the fuel. you need to flowchart the method of timing the engine to the right timing angle. Also the fuel tuning must be redone which all requires tools and instruments to monitor and correct the settings.
Clean and reset carb, check all port , clean the plugs, adjust the gaps and checck timing settings.

I own a 1997 fatboy 1340 evo with 26,000 miles on it,, i have straight pipes no baffles and a nice custom air cleaner and a screaming eagle power comander under the seat, bikes been running fine for a year...

that maybe part of it but the carb needs ajustin and cleanin--backfire is from a rich condition-so the float level can be wrong or the jets have issue--also make sure ur gitten proper spark voltage cause if low then not all gas is burned

I am running a 2006 fxdwgi with v & hines big radius and a k&n filter, had a scremin eagle fuel pack fitted by dealers, std harley plugs and braided after market leads. after fitting the fuel pack...

It sounds like your bike's fuel-air mixture is too lean. Lean fuel-air mixtures causes the engine to spit back through the intake and surge at the speeds you're talking about. You cannot maintain a steady speed at about 40 mph. I'm sorry but I know nothing about fuel injection systems. I suggest that you take your bike to a shop that has a dynometer and an exhaust gas analyzer. They can run your engine up through the complete rpm range and check the fuel-air mixture throughout the range. They should be able to make the changes necessary to get your bike running correctly.

Good Luck

Slowing down going into a turn my bike backfires and stops runing. I hit the starter it starts right up. my bike a 400 Exc Racer 2002

Some people call this a ""cough stop"" assuming the bike is well tuned and nothing else is wrong ,
I use an upper cylnder lube in my wr450f called Moreys and it solves this, it also helps it start easier, I cant explain why, might not work for everyone, but its a cheap solution, hope it helps.

Bike sparking and compression ok cannot start bike when cold this year any solutions thanks bike is year 1981

Either the spark is at the wrong timing when you would hear backfiring or coughing at least,if not it is fuel related
Check the reed valves are closing proerly, that the carb & jets are clean, & they have FRESH petrol
It sounds like it may not have run in 6 months or so in which time petrol goes off ( water can get in to petrol quicker giving the same effect

Hope this helps (if so please mark as helpful !!)

I think you would be better of checking the ignition pick-up located on the right side engine cover. you may want consider searching for info on the ignition pickup, as apparently it is a weak link on these engines. That was the first thing i repalced when i got got mine as it had sat for a while.
