How many miles on the bike? How many owners? How complete is the service history? Does the noise happen when the bike is stationary or moving or both? Are all the fluids at the correct levels (water, oil)?

Noise in engine compartment - chirping, then loud squeal


try having the radiator cap checked for performance. It is not in the engine as any change in rpms would cause a corresponding change in frequency and volume of the noise. However if there is a problem in the cooling system ( leaking head gasket etc) then as the pressure builds up and escapes from under the radiator cap it will give the same affect as a bad tap washer in the household plumbing. Turn it on slightly and the water squeals as it comes out ( tap washer vibrating from pressure fluctuations. I would suggest that a coolant pressure test and a compression test may be in order to eliminate what I have suggested.

Noises are very hard to locate on engines. You may have a valve lifter that bleeds down when the engine isn't running. Not a major problem but let the engine warm up before revving. It's probably more trouble than it's worth to replace it.

Idle problem integra


check the MAP sensor (manifold absolute pressure). The ECM (car computer) uses that to keep idle at minimum 750 RPM. It's normal for it to run high when cold. These small 4 banger motors typically run hot, and they won't run right IF they're NOT running hot, ergo the idle is usually high when it is cold so as to cause it to warm up quicker. If the RPM's drop below 750, suspect the MAP sensor, &/or ECM.

I have a 2008 mercury Milan with nearly 60k miles on it. When I come to a stop the rpm drops by 1000 then recovers quickly. What should I do to fix the problem? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Hard to say over the internet but I will try to explain. If the noise is a distict KNOCK KNOCK and it sounds like it is coming from the bottom of the engine, then it most likely is a rod or main bearing. If it is a TAP TAP noise that sounds like it's coming from the top of the engine, then most likely a valve lifer is failing/failed.
the fact that it goes away when the car is warm, makes me lean towards a bad lifter. Normaly if a bearing is bad and knocking, the noise doesn't go away.

The KNOCK noise will be somewhat hollow sounding and the TAP TAP sound will be more solid. If the KNOCK KNOCK is solid, then a rod or main bearing has most likely failed to the point that a new/reman engine will be needed.

2003 c50 volusia - i have a metal tapping noise that comes and goes usally with motor at lower rpm range . it can be idling clutch in and not driving . it does not seem to have caused a proformance problem...


A lot of people describe the valves at the correct position as a tapping, should still be there as rpm's go up but may be drowned out. When was the last time the valve clearances were checked?

You may want to get a mechanics stethescope to help pinpoint it, they're under $5 if there's a harbor freight near you

I assume you mean low idle speed 500 rpm. Genarally a tapping noise comes from the valve train, and a knocking noise comes from the crankshaft connecting rods. The way that a mechanic will narrow it down is to use a mechanics stethoscope. You can get one pretty cheaply at an auto parts store. Put the metal end of the scope on a part of the engine and listen for noise. On the other hand, if your car is idling at 5000 rpm, it would also be making ALOT of noise.
