I assume that you mean that the engine runs fine and revs up but no movement out of the bike, if this is the case then I say it is the clutch. First thing to do is check the adjustment. The clutch cable may be binding and not allowing the clutch to fully engage. Try that first hopfully that will take care of it, if not it may be time for a new clutch. Good Luck!

If the bike revs and doesnt or barely moves like it is slipping youll need to buy a clutch kit it will consist of clutch plates and friction plates the cost is about $70 to $90 you should be able to order it at any repair shop it is located on the brake pedal side the round cover on the main part of the engine if you decide to fix it your self take pictures as you go so you can look at them as a refrence

2007 Yamaha Stratoliner 12.5k miles. Downshifting from 2nd to 1st shift lever does not always catch first gear. Problem is intermittent.

Hi, Anonymous and the usual suspects are:
1. Clutch dragging slightly.
2. Primary chaincase overfilled with lubricant.
3. Corners wore off shifter clutch dogs.
4. Shifter return spring bent or broken.
5. Bent shifter rod.
6. A loose shift lever on shifter shaft.
7. Shifter forks sprung.
8. Shifter pawl needs adjusting.
9. Heel/toe shifter coming in contact with the floorboard.
10. Transmission oil too heavy.

My fzr 1000 is leaking gearbox fluid by the looks of it ,i start it up and when i put it in 1st gear it cuts out before i even let the clutch out. but if i put it in 2nd gear it doesnt cut out,, is this...

that's a bad neutral safety's a shop, the reason it goes bad:

the 1st gear is for getting the bike moving, "never" wind out in 1st gear...ever...high rpm and going from 1st to 2nd is very bad for a transmission...think about how much movement is happening to go from the bottom, past neutral, to 2nd gear...that's where most trans damage occurs...once you start moving, go to 2nd, then rev it out... remember...1st gear is for getting moving only...

2006 R6 Shifting Problem

Howdy: The 3rd and 4th gears are used the most, after awhile the dog and shifting forks get worn more. Try changing to Yamaha Lube simi-syn oil 10/40. Drain oil after warm up (get trans oil warm). The oil is in a silver 4gal containe at the Yamaha dealer. This oil has helped me.
Good luck - Doug

I can not shift out of 1st and 2nd. I can shift from 1st to neutral, and 1st to 2nd, but I can not go from 2nd to 3rd. When I depress the clutch and pull up on the shift lever to go from 2nd to 3rd it is...

Sounds like a bent shift fork of broken dog gear. Try cleaning the inside of trans with part light oil and solvent. (not fuel) Rock bike a few times and shift gears, Do not start. Keep doing so untill shifting gets easier. If this does not work. Try starting it one time and shift easy. Do not force. Still no luck - Split cases and repair

2009 650 Classic: Does not stay in gear, problem getting 1st gear at times. When I bought the bike 1 month ago the problem was there. I returned the bike to Bobby J's in Albuquerque, NM. The service dept....

Wish I could come up with a line of B.S. as good as their service department does. You have a slightly bent shift fork. Tell the jerks to fix it. It is a problem, it is not right, and it is covered under warranty. Tell them you really don't want to get creamed when the bike pops out of gear and doesn't want to go back into gear as a cement truck is coming at you. If you let them stall you until the warranty runs out it will cost you around $1400.00 to get it fixed. Contact the Regional manager for Yamaha ASAP. Google "Yamaha Motor Corporation"
What I am afraid will happen is that the dealer will do the repair and install a new shift fork then tell you they could not find anything wrong so you now owe them the cash because Yamaha will not stand the repair cost for a non-existent problem. Send Yamaha a certified letter as to your concerns and insist someone other than the dealer inspect the bike to confirm the problem. Keep a copy of the letter and the postal receipt. Is there another dealer in the area?

The diagram below shows how a shift fork moves a slider gear left and right to change gears. A slightly bent shift fork would not let the slider gear "dogs" fully engage into 1st gear.

A “very helpful” rating for this answer? Thanks!

2nd gear does not work on my Yamaha Virago xv250

Sounds like a slightly bent shift fork. The slider gear isn't quite engaging into 2nd. If the bend gets worse then you won't get into first and the pedal will get real stiff in those gears. The repair is best done in the shop.

Please rate this solution. Thanks!
